SF’s Chinese community adopted Ed Lee as a native son

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Ed Lee wasn’t born in San Francisco, but that didn’t matter to the large Chinese community that adopted him as a native son. “He was one of us,” Norman Fong, director of the Chinatown Community Development Center, said Tuesday. “One of our guys made it to mayor.” Lee became known in the Chinatown community in the 1970s as the civil rights lawyer who pushed residents of the Ping Yuen public housing complex to speak up and fight to improve conditions. Roy Moore unwilling to concede: ‘It’s not over’

New York Post

GOP Alabama Senate Candidate Roy Moore refused to concede on Tuesday night and insisted more votes could still swing the race and save him from a stunning defeat to an underdog Democrat. “When the vote is this close, that it’s not over,” he told supporters in Montgomery at his campaign rally shortly after Democrat Doug...

Oil hits two-year high on shutdown of pipeline

Times of Malta

Oil prices jumped to their highest in more than two years yesterday after the shutdown of a North Sea pipeline knocked out significant supply from an already tightening market. World stocks took a break from a three-day rally. Brent crude futures, the global benchmark for oil prices, rose above $65 a barrel – their highest since mid-2015 – after Britain’s Forties pipeline was shut due to cracks as a cold snap sweeps the country. The Forties pipeline is important for the global oil market because... Читать дальше...

Catching Up on Other Events: British K.O., Russian Championship, Mind Games

The Chess Mind

The London Chess Classic is over, but it wasn't - and isn't - the only show in town. Literally: there was also the concurrent British K.O. Championship. (Rules here, results and games here.) That came down to a match between Luke McShane and David Howell (as reported earlier) that combined both classical (40/90', the rest/30', with 30" increment per move) and rapid games (15' + 10"). The four classical games were a success story for the Black pieces. Howell drew the first game with White, which... Читать дальше...

  • The last time Alabama voted for a Democratic senator was in 1992.
  • That senator, Richard Shelby, became a Republican two years later.
  • Shelby is still a Republican senator for Alabama, and did not vote for Roy Moore, who lost the special election there on Tuesday night.

Before Doug Jones' election victory on Tuesday night, the last Democratic senator elected in Alabama was Richard Shelby, in 1992. Shelby was initially a Democrat... Читать дальше...

Democrats’ IT Man Imran Awan Abuses Women

Front Page Magazine

In Congress (Al Franken, John Conyers), entertainment (Harvey Weinstein, Ben Affleck) and the establishment media (Matt Lauer, Charlie Rose), women are stepping up with charges of sexual harassment, and in some cases powerful men are stepping down. As this unfolds, one key abuser has managed to avoid both the outcry and the scrutiny he deserves.

Recognising a Maltese artist

Times of Malta

I had the opportunity to visit my native city, Cospicua, and saw the magnificent theological, poetical, romantic painting of the Immaculate Conception by Peter Paul Caruana, born in Valletta in 1794. Caruana studied in Rome under well-known professor Tommaso Minardi  in 1821. Minardi led the St Luke Academy that was situated at Palazzo Dori Pamphili, in Piazza Venezia.  Caruana at the age of 35 years, painted the titular painting of the Immaculate Conception. There in Rome, at this academy probably... Читать дальше...
