Chicago man beaten by Metra police reaches $225K settlement

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago man beaten by a transit police officer in 2015 and wrongly jailed for nearly two years has received a $225,000 settlement from the Metra commuter railroad. The Daily Herald reports that attorneys for D'Nardo Mack say he was "unjustifiably attacked" at Millennium Station in Chicago by former Metra Officer David Robertson. Israel intercepts 2 rockets from Gaza in latest exchange

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military said it intercepted two rockets fired from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel on Wednesday in the latest barrage by Palestinian militants. The army said in a statement that the Iron Dome missile defense system downed the rockets as they headed toward Israel. A third projectile hit an open area in southern Israel. 2 Detroit police officers indicted in collision shop scheme

DETROIT (AP) — Two Detroit police officers have been indicted on extortion charges in connection with a scheme involving stolen and abandoned vehicles. The U.S. Attorney's office says Wednesday that four retired officers also pleaded guilty in the case in which cash bribes allegedly were given by collision shop owners in exchange for referring the vehicles to their businesses. Deputy switches from gun to Taser to drop knife-wielding man

(AP) — A quick-thinking Oklahoma sheriff's deputy is being praised after using her Taser instead of a handgun to subdue a knife-wielding man who later said he was trying to provoke a shooting. Tulsa County Sheriff's Deputy Catherine Curtin was flagged down Monday by someone saying a man with two large knives was threatening people. Curtin tells KJRH-TV she had the man at gunpoint but switched to the Taser when she saw the man showing "classic suicide-by-cop" behavior. She shocked the 60-year-old man, who was jailed. Washington state man sentenced for crash that killed 3

(AP) — A Spokane, Washington, man was sentenced to seven years in prison and 25 years under the supervision of the Oregon Psychiatry Security Review Board for a crash that killed three people last year. The Oregonian/OregonLive reports 32-year-old Nathan James Verhaeghe was sentenced last week after he pleaded guilty in October to first-degree assault and three counts of second-degree manslaughter. 2 more charged with drug offenses at North Carolina prison

COLUMBIA, N.C. (AP) — Authorities have charged two more inmates at a North Carolina prison with drug offenses. The Tyrrell County Sheriff's Office told local media outlets that 40-year-old Xavier D. Johnson and 25-year-old Jahmel J. Ross, who are being held at the Tyrrell Prison Work Farm, are charged with possession of controlled substances on prison or jail premises. Sheriff Darryl Liverman says 30 inmates at the prison work farm have been charged with drug offenses since May. Officials say an investigation is continuing.
