«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

MOSCOW (AP) — A senior executive at the Russian nuclear processing plant suspected of being behind a spike of radioactivity over Europe this fall has admitted that it emits the isotope that was recorded in the Ural mountains. Russian officials last month reported high levels of Ruthenium-106 in areas close to the Mayak plant but the plant insisted it could not have been the contamination source because it doesn't extract the isotope or conduct any operations that may lead to its release. No Moore! Doug Jones Rides GOP Storm to Senate in Victory That Could Add Momentum to #MeToo Movement

Democracy Now!

In a stunning upset, Democrat Doug Jones defeated Republican Roy Moore in the controversial race to fill the Alabama Senate seat left vacant by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. With 100 percent of the vote tallied, Jones led Moore by nearly 21,000 votes, a margin of 1.5 percentage points. With Jones in the Senate, the Republicans' majority will narrow to 51-49, endangering Trump's agenda and possibly ushering in a Democratic wave in next year's congressional elections. Roy Moore has so far refused to concede the race... Читать дальше...

The Week

Federal Reserve policy makers wrap up their two-day meeting on Wednesday, and they are widely expected to bump up interest rates by a quarter percent for the third time this year. The meeting is Janet Yellen's last as chair. Her successor, Fed Governor Jerome Powell, said during his recent confirmation hearing that he had "no sense of an overheating economy," suggesting openness to speeding up rate increases as long as the economy continues to strengthen and inflation remains in an acceptable zone. «Seattle Post-Intelligencer» (seattlepi.com)

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — This is the lesson that the working-class city of Everett has learned: It takes a community to rescue the hardcore homeless. It takes teams of outreach workers — building relationships with men and women struggling with addiction or untreated mental illness, prodding them to get help. Donald Trump Is Losing His Only Superpower

The New Republic

Once it became clear that Doug Jones had won an upset victory over Roy Moore in the Alabama senate race on Tuesday, the immediate question was: How would the president take the news? Alabama was a deep red state where, in the presidential election a week earlier, Trump had won 62 percent of the vote to... Читать дальше...

Pragmatist Peter Stoger steadies Borussia Dortmund after Bosz failure

ESPN FC

The ESPN FC crew delve into Peter Stoger's appointment at Borussia Dortmund. When it comes to replacing managers, clubs' choices can often be summed up with by the old romantic maxim of "opposites attract." Borussia Dortmund choosing Peter Stoger to succeed Petr Bosz this week was a classic case in point. After the Dutchman's disastrous high-concept, high-risk, high-defensive line tactics had led to a collapse in form, Stoger's ultra-pragmatic, safety-first and non-ideological approach suddenly proved hugely appealing.
