Happy New Year links!

The fun of the holidays is over, and it’s back to the grind for most of us. Here on the site, that means, among other things, a return to the 40 in 40, which kicked off yesterday if you missed it. Jerry Dipoto probably spent New Year’s Day frantically digging his burner phones out of the Hawaiian sands he buried them in last week. Here’s hoping you had a more fun first day of 2018.

Marlies end 2017 as top team in North Division.

The Toronto Marlies finished off a tough end to 2017 in style by beating the Belleville Senators 5-1.

A three-point performance from The Goat Frederik Gauthier, the first AHL goal for rookie centerman Adam Brooks, and a three-assist afternoon from Travis Dermott helped the young Leafs snap out of a recent spell where they lost six of seven games.

The off-season has slowed to a crawl. Although Wade Davis became the first free agent ranked in the top ten of MLB Trade Rumors’ annual ranking of free agents to sign with a club, there are no signs yet that the market will begin to accelerate with a new year.

YouTube star Logan Paul came under fire for posting a video of an apparent suicide victim in Japan’s “suicide forest," Aokigahara.

 Greek authorities say a young tourist couple has been found dead in a house they were renting on a western island, with initial indications pointing to a double suicide, Ekathimerini writes. 

Police said Tuesday the couple, whose bodies were found on the island of Cephalonia, had been identified as a 30-year-old German man and a 23-year-old woman of Bulgarian descent.
