An early-morning blaze ignited at a cardboard manufacturing plant Tuesday near the San Jose International Airport, authorities said. The inferno was reported about 2 a.m. on the 500 block of Matthew Street, nearly 3 miles from the airport, according to the Santa Clara Fire Department. The fire started in an exterior storage area that held bales of cardboard. (AP) — Duke Energy says a mysterious hum some Lafayette residents are hearing is nothing more than extra power surging through the northwest Indiana city's utility lines to meet customers' power demands during the current Arctic blast. Duke spokesman Lew Middleton says the noise occurs when more current moves through utility lines and power substations during very cold or hot weather. The Poughkeepsie Journal reports the MTA announced it is suspending the Newburgh-Beacon ferry Tuesday. Officials cited freezing temperatures. Poughkeepsie saw a record-breaking low of minus 10 degrees on New Year's Day.
