A year after a deadly gathering of far-right extremists in Charlottesville, less than two dozen white nationalists marched Sunday across from the White House, their numbers dwarfed by thousands of counter-protesters.

About 20 white nationalist demonstrators were outnumbered by hundreds of counterprotesters who taunted them on Sunday in Washington, D.C. There was a large police presence aimed at preventing a repeat of violence on the 1-year Charlottesville rally anniversary.

White nationalists who marched on Washington and rallied at a park near the White House have left the area in white vans under a police escort. The demonstration — led by the principal organizer of last year's "Unite the Right" event in Charlottesville, Va., Jason Kessler — ended earlier than expected and was smaller than anticipated.
