Italy's Catholic bishops offered to care for a majority of 140 migrants the country's government had prevented from leaving an Italian coast guard ship docked for days in a Sicilian harbor because politics shouldn't be practiced at the expense of the poor, prominent churchmen said Sunday.

Street closure planned for new U. of Vermont students

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — A portion of Burlington's Main Street is scheduled to be closer during a procession of new students at the University of Vermont. Weather permitting, a section of Main Street near the UVM campus will be closed for an estimated 30 minutes Sunday while new students move from the convocation ceremony at the Patrick Gymnasium to the university green where a candlelight ceremony is planned. The UVM convocation is set to begin at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday. About 2,500 new students are due on the UVM campus this fall.
