New simulation sheds light on spiraling supermassive black holes

Eurekalert.org

A new model is bringing scientists a step closer to understanding the kinds of light signals produced when two supermassive black holes, which are millions to billions of times the mass of the Sun, spiral toward a collision. For the first time, a new computer simulation that fully incorporates the physical effects of Einstein's general theory of relativity shows that gas in such systems will glow predominantly in ultraviolet and X-ray light.

Making the right connections

Eurekalert.org

Researchers at VIB and KU Leuven have uncovered a new molecular interaction that governs the formation of specific functional connections between two types of neurons. It gives an important clue as to how unique interactions give shape to precisely organized neuronal networks in the brain.

Analysis of published studies links processed meat consumption to breast cancer risk

Eurekalert.org

Studies on red and processed meat consumption with breast cancer risk have generated inconsistent results. An International Journal of Cancer analysis has now examined all published studies on the topic.Comparing the highest to the lowest category in the 15 studies included in the analysis, processed meat consumption was associated with a 9% higher breast cancer risk.

No more messing around with passwords

Eurekalert.org

(IMDEA Networks Institute) Who doesn't have web accounts and faces a daily challenge of having to save and remember a plethora of usernames and passwords? An international team of researchers has unveiled a new secure authentication platform for mobile devices that links all of a user's online accounts to their identity, leaving their management to be handled by their cell phone.

A top-notch chemist

Eurekalert.org

(University of Würzburg) He received a prestigious award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The renowned chemist, Kazunori Sugiyasu, will now join the University of Würzburg to do research with Professor Frank Würthner.

Researchers find inspiration in nature to improve ceramic armor

Eurekalert.org

(U.S. Army Research Laboratory) Future American Soldiers will be better protected in combat by stronger and lighter body armor thanks to innovative work at the US Army Research Laboratory. Materials science engineers are using nature as the inspiration for breakthroughs in additive manufacturing.

Samara University is developing a biomodule for nanosatellites

Eurekalert.org

(Samara University) For conducting biological experiments in circumterrestrial orbit the team of researchers at the Samara University is performing laboratory-testing measuring the capacity of an automatic module prototype. The biomodule is being created in accordance with Cubesat standards and is intended to be flown on board the nanosatellite or small spacecraft.

USC Stem Cell scientist Andy McMahon and collaborators tune into the organ concert

Eurekalert.org

(University of Southern California - Health Sciences) Every minute of every day, your organs are using a complex language to communicate with each other about the basic physiological processes necessary for life -- everything from blood pressure regulation to pH balance to metabolism. To decipher this little-known language, USC Stem Cell scientist Andy McMahon has joined forces with top scientists at Harvard and Stanford universities under the auspices of the NIH Director's Transformative Research Award.

Yongxin Zhao receives NIH Director's New Innovator Award

Eurekalert.org

(Carnegie Mellon University) Yongxin (Leon) Zhao, assistant professor of biological sciences at Carnegie Mellon University has received a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director's New Innovator Award. The award is part of the National Institutes of Health's High-Risk, High-Reward Research program and will support Zhao as he develops transformative nanoscale imaging techniques that will allow researchers to see precise 'biomolecule maps' in pathology samples. These maps will allow for the comprehensive analysis of complex diseases... Читать дальше...

NHGRI Scientific Director Dan Kastner named 2018 Federal Employee of the Year

Eurekalert.org

(NIH/National Human Genome Research Institute) Daniel Kastner, M.D., Ph.D., scientific director of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), was named the Federal Employee of the Year as part of the 2018 Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals program, known as the 'Sammies.' Dr. Kasnter is recognized for his work in identifying an entirely new class of rare genetic diseases and treatments to alleviate suffering for thousands of patients in the US and around the world.

Abdominal aortic calcification may signal future heart attack

Eurekalert.org

Computed tomography (CT)-based measures of calcification in the abdominal aorta are strong predictors of heart attacks and other adverse cardiovascular events -- stronger even than the widely used Framingham risk score, according to a new study.

An upper-class woman with higher education: The profile of the homeopathy user in Spain

Eurekalert.org

A new study identifies the typical pattern of homeopathy consumers in Spain, based on data from the CIS (Centre for Sociological Research) barometer, published last February. The results show that the profile is that of a middle- or upper-class woman of about 46, with higher education and a progressive political ideology.

Why vitamin E effect is often a matter of luck until now

Eurekalert.org

Vitamin E's positive effects often fail to manifest themselves as strongly as expected, but sometimes administering vitamin E actually has detrimental effects. An international team has now found a possible cause for this. It has shown that the effect of vitamin E, which is taken as a tablet or capsule, is not based on the vitamin itself, but rather on the effect of a metabolite. This socalled alpha-carboxychromanol has e. g. a promising anti-inflammatory effect.

Wild suburbia

Eurekalert.org

It's a jungle out there in the suburbs, where many wild mammals are thriving near humans. That's the conclusion of a large-scale study using camera trap images from hundreds of citizen scientists in Washington, D.C., and Raleigh, North Carolina.

The only known white dwarf orbited by planetary fragments has been analyzed

Eurekalert.org

The study, led by Paula Izquierdo, a doctoral student at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) and the University of La Laguna (ULL), has gone deeply into the analysis of this exceptional white dwarf, which shows periodic transits produced by fragments of a shredded planetesimal. The observations used for this research were obtained with the Gran Telescopio Canarias and with the Liverpool Telescope.

New knowledge on how neurons talk to muscles

Eurekalert.org

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have discovered a new way in which nerve cells can control movement. In a study on zebrafish published in the journal PNAS they show that the contact between neurons and muscles is more dynamic than previously thought. The results can open up new avenues to treating spinal cord injury and certain neurological diseases.
