CC Sabathia clears next big hurdle toward Yankees return

New York Post

CC Sabathia won’t be on the Opening Day roster, but the veteran lefty took a step Saturday toward eventually being ready to join the Yankees’ rotation during the first month of the season. Sabathia graduated from throwing bullpen sessions to a simulated game on Field 2 next to Steinbrenner Field in front of a Blue...

Sabbatical stuff

Paper Blog

I am currently on my first (and last) sabbatical leave. A week in Sudan was followed by just over two weeks in Jena (Germany) and a week in Basel (Switzerland). I then flew to Washington DC and came to the School of Theology at University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, USA (via Roanoke VA, then Abingdon VA to preach).

The introduction of new applied and vocational subjects

Times of Malta

I refer to the article ‘Teachers, union voice concerns over plans for new ‘applied’ subjects’ (The Sunday Times of Malta, March, 10). The article gives the impression that the changes being implemented are being introduced overnight with no planning whatsoever. This is far from being the case. In fact, these changes are aimed at something over which there is unanimous consensus and which has been a long time coming: to increase the number of students who successfully achieve their educational pathway while in compulsory education. The Balkans: Feeding Russia’s and Turkey’s Hunger

The Globalist

By Alon Ben-Meir

While Serbia is trying to balance its bilateral relations between Russia and the EU, Kosovo and Macedonia are more transparent in seeking Europeanization.

Beep, beep, beep...

Times of Malta

No, it is not artificial intelligence taking over. Nor is it an army of robots, an alien invasion or a space odyssey. Far worse than that, it is the sound of bad design, poor customer care, a careless attitude, unbridled selfishness, bad parenting and general stupidity. It is the sound of the lovely ‘massaging armchairs’ found at Malta International Airport, which beep constantly when sat on without being fed the right coinage. Naturally, a number of in-dividuals, from mischievous children to headphone-wearing... Читать дальше...

Heartfelt appeal for horse

Times of Malta

I refer to the article entitled ‘Please save my cheeky boy’ (The Sunday Times of Malta, March 10).  Now, if such a story doesn’t sadden you, I don’t know what will. The joy of keeping such a horse, which suffers from a genetic stifle joint problem, is more valuable than anything else. The horse’s owner, who has made sure that the animal is pain free, certainly deserves a pat on the back. The horse can run free, but not be ridden, and therefore can enjoy life to the full. Unfortunately the horse’s condition is a result of inbreeding... Читать дальше...

Reinstated policeman

Times of Malta

The story in The Sunday Times of Malta (‘Police ‘tenor’ in trouble again’, March 10), about the reinstated policeman who was promoted to sergeant and is being investigated for allegedly breaching disciplinary rules, made really interesting reading on a Sunday morning. The best part, in my opinion, is when Michael Farrugia, the Home Affairs Minister, “confirmed that the police disciplinary board, set up as an independent body, is investigating …” Being of an inquisitive nature, may I ask by whom was this “independent investigating body” set up? Nike is world’s most valuable brand

Times of Malta

Nike is the world’s most valuable brand, with a brand value of $32.4 billion, an increase of 16 per cent compared to last year, according to valuation and strategy consultancy Brand Finance. It said the sportswear giant has strengthened its position due to sales growth in China, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Brand Finance calculates the value of brands through a number of measurements including past and forecasted revenues, calculated brand strength as well as the value of a brand’s trademark and associated marketing IP... University of Louisiana at Monroe trumpeters provide ‘Taps’ for veterans’ funerals

Kfor.com

MONROE, La. – Ten trumpet students at a Louisiana university are offering to play Taps at veterans’ funerals, rather than leave the haunting farewell bugle call to a recording. Talons for Taps is a group named because the Warhawk is mascot of the University of Louisiana at Monroe. All of the students are taught by Assistant Professor Eric Siereveld. Siereveld said he suggested the volunteer program and explained the importance of acknowledging the sacrifices that service members make. Music education... Читать дальше...

Deckchairs and unicorns in Brussels - Kristina Chetcuti

Times of Malta

Every month I correspond with the accounts department of this newspaper, and thanks to this exchange of e-mails, month in, month out, for more than a decade now, I’ve kept in touch with reliable, dependable Roberta. Aside from the boring invoicing, we get to brief each other about the little ups and downs of our lives. This winter, my e-mails have had their fair share of lamentation on the weather – the never-ending cold spells have made me miserable indeed. In our mail last month – the week after that hurricane storm ... Читать дальше...

On the appointment of judges - Tonio Azzopardi

Times of Malta

With so many new judges about to be appointed to serve in the national courts of Malta as well as in the regional courts under the auspices of the Council of Europe and the European Union, it is pertinent to bring to the attention of the authorities and the public in general the judgment delivered this month by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg on March 12, 2019 in the case of Guðmundur Andri Ástráðsson v. Iceland (Application no. 26374/18).  Naturally, this judgment will also have... Читать дальше...
