Thinking outside the blood: Perspectives on tissue-resident Trypanosoma brucei

Plos.org

by Nathan P. Crilly, Monica R. Mugnier

Trypanosoma brucei is a protozoan parasite that causes human and animal African trypanosomiases (HAT and AAT). In the mammalian host, the parasite lives entirely extracellularly, in both the blood and interstitial spaces in tissues. Although most T. brucei research has focused on the biology of blood- and central nervous system (CNS)-resident parasites, a number of recent studies have highlighted parasite reservoirs in the dermis and adipose tissue,... The Ebola virus soluble glycoprotein contributes to viral pathogenesis by activating the MAP kinase signaling pathway

Plos.org

by Wakako Furuyama, Kyle Shifflett, Heinz Feldmann, Andrea Marzi

Ebola virus (EBOV) expresses three different glycoproteins (GPs) from its GP gene. The primary product, soluble GP (sGP), is secreted in abundance during infection. EBOV sGP has been discussed as a potential pathogenicity factor, however, little is known regarding its functional role. Here, we analyzed the role of sGP in vitro and in vivo. We show that EBOV sGP has two different functions that contribute to infectivity in tissue culture. Читать дальше...

Spatio-temporal characteristics of the novel coronavirus attention network and its influencing factors in China

Plos.org

by Xiaojia Guo, Jing Zhang, Xueling Wu

The outbreak of a novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19), wherein more than 200 million people have been infected and millions have died, poses a great threat to achieving the United Nations 2030 sustainable development goal (SDGs). Based on the Baidu index of ’novel coronavirus’, this paper analyses the spatial and temporal characteristics of and factors that influenced the attention network for COVID-19 from January 9, 2020, to April 15, 2020. The study found that (1) Temporally... Читать дальше...

An improved ant colony optimization algorithm based on context for tourism route planning

Plos.org

by Shengbin Liang, Tongtong Jiao, Wencai Du, Shenming Qu

To solve the problem of one-sided pursuit of the shortest distance but ignoring the tourist experience in the process of tourism route planning, an improved ant colony optimization algorithm is proposed for tourism route planning. Contextual information of scenic spots significantly effect people’s choice of tourism destination, so the pheromone update strategy is combined with the contextual information such as weather and comfort... Functional in vitro assessment of modified antibodies: Impact of label on protein properties

Plos.org

by Martin R. Edelmann, Simon Hauri

Labelling of therapeutic antibodies with radionuclides or fluorophores is routinely used to study their pharmacokinetic properties. A critical assumption in utilizing labelled therapeutic antibodies is that the label has no unfavourable effects on antibody charge, hydrophobicity, or receptor affinity. Ideally, the labelled protein should not have any significant deviations from the physiological properties of the original molecule. This article describes... Читать дальше...

Predictors for successful psychotherapy: Does migration status matter?

Plos.org

by Friederike Kobel, Yesim Erim, Eva Morawa

Background

We investigated, if migration status, and additional sociodemographic and clinical factors, are associated with somatization and depressiveness at admission and with remission after inpatient psychotherapy.

Methods

Multiple linear and binary logistic regression analyses were used to identify predictors for severity of somatoform and depressive symptoms at admission of inpatient psychotherapy (T0), and for remission after inpatient psychotherapy (T1). Читать дальше...

Does gender inequality matter for access to and utilization of maternal healthcare services in Bangladesh?

Plos.org

by Firoz Ahmed, Fahmida Akter Oni, Sk. Sharafat Hossen

There is a high prevalence of gender gap in Bangladesh which might affect women’s likelihood to receive maternal healthcare services. In this backdrop, we aim to investigate how gender inequality measured by intrahousehold bargaining power (or autonomy) of women and their attitudes towards intimate partner violence (IPV) affects accessing and utilizing maternal health care services. We used Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS)... Читать дальше...
