Neural response to sad autobiographical recall and sad music listening post recall reveals distinct brain activation in alpha and gamma bands

Plos.org

by Ashish Gupta, Braj Bhushan, Laxmidhar Behera

Although apparently paradoxical, sad music has been effective in coping with sad life experiences. The underpinning brain neural correlates of this are not well explored. We performed Electroencephalography (EEG) source-level analysis for the brain during a sad autobiographical recall (SAR) and upon exposure to sad music. We specifically investigated the Cingulate cortex complex and Parahippocampus (PHC) regions, areas prominently involved in emotion and memory processing. Читать дальше...

Stakeholder engagement variability across public, private and public-private partnership projects: A data-driven network-based analysis

Plos.org

by Shahadat Uddin, Stephen Ong, Petr Matous

Stakeholder engagement is generally considered one of the most pertinent factors impacting project outcomes. However, there is lacking empirical evidence documenting patterns of stakeholder engagement and their potential differences between public, private and public-private partnership (PPP) projects. This study leverages social network research methods to capture and quantitively compare these engagement structures. Stakeholder network data were... Читать дальше...

The impact of Blackboard Collaborate breakout groups on the cognitive achievement of physical education teaching styles during the COVID-19 pandemic

Plos.org

by Ahmed Hassan Rakha

The rapid spread of COVID-19 has forced schools and universities to close. Globally, education systems face unprecedented challenges, and learning management systems (LMS) are the only solution. The current study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a Blackboard collaborative breakout group on the cognitive achievement of physical education teaching styles. The quasi-experimental method involved creating two groups: one experimental and one control, with the experimental... Читать дальше...

Community pharmacists’ response to complaints of gastroesophageal reflux: A simulated patient study in the Northern United Arab Emirates

Plos.org

by Fatima Boura, Moawia M. Al-Tabakha, Nageeb Hassan, Mohamad Darwich

Introduction

Patients frequently use gastric acid-reducing agents (ARAs) to treat symptoms affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Thus, the risk for drug–drug interactions (DDI) is a serious concern. This potentially makes the community pharmacist (CP) act as a primary intervention by providing the appropriate counseling and dispensing practice.

Objective

To evaluate CPs’ counseling and dispensing practices regarding... Читать дальше...

An optimized GAN method based on the Que-Attn and contrastive learning for underwater image enhancement

Plos.org

by Zeru Lan, Bin Zhou, Weiwei Zhao, Shaoqing Wang

Research on underwater image processing has increased significantly in the past decade due to the precious resources that exist underwater. However, it is still a challenging problem to restore degraded underwater images. Existing prior-based methods show limited performance in many cases due to their reliance on hand-crafted features. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an effective unsupervised generative adversarial network(GAN) for underwater image restoration. Читать дальше...

Study on the sustainability of ancient canal towns on the basis of the topological structure analysis of streets and lanes: A case study of the Xixing ancient town

Plos.org

by Weilu Lv, Ning Wang, Yun Huang

In China, rapid urbanization and the decline of the canal’s shipping function have directly led to the decline of the space and style of ancient towns with canals. The ancient town of Xixing, known to be the first canal town, is located west of the Zhedong canal section of the Grand Canal. It used to be the most active transportation hub and trade transit point in the east Zhejiang Province. However, the canal is now facing problems in protection and renewal, which require urgent attention. Читать дальше...

Greater numbers of passes and shorter possession durations result in increased likelihood of goals in 2010 to 2018 World Cup Champions

Plos.org

by Tim Taha, Ahmed-Yahya Ali

Data analysis in football has indicated an increased likelihood of goals with fewer passes within a possession which have resulted in recommendations of fewer passes and more direct play to score goals. These recommendations did not consider where possessions originated and appear to be contradicted by on-field playing tactics by recent championship winning clubs and national teams in elite competition. Therefore, this study examined the influence of number of... Читать дальше...

Caregivers’ use of insecticide-treated nets is associated with the use of ITNs by children under the age of five in Ghana

Plos.org

by Daudi Yeboah, Michael Boah, Martin Nyaaba Adokiya

Background

Malaria poses a greater risk to children under the age of five years due to its high morbidity and mortality rates. The use of Insecticide-Treated Net (ITN) has been proven to be an effective preventive intervention in the control of malaria. However, its utilisation remains low. This study assessed the association of mother or caregiver’s utilisation of ITN on its use by their children under five years of age in Ghana.

CRPGAN: Learning image-to-image translation of two unpaired images by cross-attention mechanism and parallelization strategy

Plos.org

by Long Feng, Guohua Geng, Qihang Li, Yi Jiang, Zhan Li, Kang Li

Unsupervised image-to-image translation (UI2I) tasks aim to find a mapping between the source and the target domains from unpaired training data. Previous methods can not effectively capture the differences between the source and the target domain on different scales and often leads to poor quality of the generated images, noise, distortion, and other conditions that do not match human vision perception, and has high time complexity. A study of a diauxic growth experiment using an expanded dynamic flux balance framework

Plos.org

by Emil Karlsen, Marianne Gylseth, Christian Schulz, Eivind Almaas

Flux balance analysis (FBA) remains one of the most used methods for modeling the entirety of cellular metabolism, and a range of applications and extensions based on the FBA framework have been generated. Dynamic flux balance analysis (dFBA), the expansion of FBA into the time domain, still has issues regarding accessibility limiting its widespread adoption and application, such as a lack of a consistently rigid formalism... Behavioral and hormonal assessment of stress in foals (Equus caballus) throughout the weaning process

Plos.org

by Kristin Delank, Sven Reese, Michael Erhard, Anna-Caroline Wöhr

This study had the aim to demonstrate the midterm effects (three weeks) of weaning on foals’ welfare. For this purpose, foals’ behavioral changes and fecal levels metabolites of cortisol were evaluated. The observations took place at the state stud farm of Baden-Wuerttemberg in Germany. Ten foals (six colts and four fillies) were observed from one day before weaning up until three weeks after weaning. Weaning was divided into three blocks... Читать дальше...

Lack of the Ig cell adhesion molecule BT-IgSF (IgSF11) induced behavioral changes in the open maze, water maze and resident intruder test

Plos.org

by Dirk Montag, Laura Pelz, Fritz G. Rathjen

The brain- and testis-specific Ig superfamily protein (BT-IgSF, also termed IgSF11) is a homotypic cell adhesion protein. In the nervous system, BT-IgSF regulates the stability of AMPA receptors in the membrane of cultured hippocampal neurons, modulates the connectivity of chandelier cells and controls gap junction-mediated astrocyte-astrocyte communication. Here, we performed behavioral tests in BT-IgSF-deficient mice. BT-IgSF-deficient mice were... Читать дальше...
