Pursuing decarbonization along with national security: Assessing public support for the Thacker Pass lithium mine

Plos.org

by Azusa Uji, Jaehyun Song, Nives Dolšak, Aseem Prakash

Decarbonization policies are being stymied by political conflict. Local communities might oppose decarbonization infrastructure such as solar farms, mines, or transmission lines if they view these projects as imposing high costs on them in relation to their benefits. To decarbonize, the automobile industry seeks to shift from the internal combustion engine to electric vehicles, which require lithium-based rechargeable batteries. In the United States... Mother’s perception of size at birth is a weak predictor of low birth weight: Evidence from Nepal Demographic and Health Survey

Plos.org

by Pawan Acharya, Suyasha Adhikari, Tara Ballav Adhikari

Birth weight is a consistent predictor of morbidity and survivability in infancy and later life. This study aims to assess the accuracy of the mother’s perception of size at birth to predict low birth weight(LBW). This study used data from Nepal Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS 2016). Information about 5060 mother pairs was obtained from the NDHS dataset. However, birth weight data were available for 3095 children, and therefore they were only included in the further analysis. Short-term response to iron resupply in an iron-limited open ocean diatom reveals rapid decay of iron-responsive transcripts

Plos.org

by Joerg Behnke, Yun Cai, Hong Gu, Julie LaRoche

In large areas of the ocean, iron concentrations are insufficient to promote phytoplankton growth. Numerous studies have been conducted to characterize the effect of iron on algae and how algae cope with fluctuating iron concentrations. Fertilization experiments in low-iron areas resulted primarily in diatom-dominated algal blooms, leading to laboratory studies on diatoms comparing low- and high-iron conditions. Here, we focus on the short-term... Читать дальше...

Phytoplankton and benthic infauna responses to aeration, an experimental ecological remediation, in a polluted subtropical estuary with organic-rich sediments

Plos.org

by Xiao Ma, Austin Fox, Stacey Fox, Kevin B. Johnson

Fine-grained organic-rich sediments (FGORS) are accumulating in estuaries worldwide, with multi-faceted negative ecosystem impacts. A pilot experiment was carried out in a residential canal of the Indian River Lagoon estuary (IRL, Florida, USA) using an aeration treatment intended to mitigate the harmful ecological effects of organic-rich sediment pollution. Planktonic and benthic communities were monitored, and environmental data collected throughout the aeration process. Читать дальше...

SPNet: Structure preserving network for depth completion

Plos.org

by Tao Li, Songning Luo, Zhiwei Fan, Qunbing Zhou, Ting Hu

Depth completion aims to predict a dense depth map from a sparse one. Benefiting from the powerful ability of convolutional neural networks, recent depth completion methods have achieved remarkable performance. However, it is still a challenging problem to well preserve accurate depth structures, such as tiny structures and object boundaries. To tackle this problem, we propose a structure preserving network (SPNet) in this paper. Firstly... Читать дальше...

The relationship between Chinese university students’ learning preparation and learning achievement within the EFL blended teaching context in COVID-19 post-epidemic era: The mediating effect of learning methods

Plos.org

by Meng Hua, Lin Wang

The effectiveness of the blended teaching model in improving university students’ English learning achievement has been frequently reported in China in the post-pandemic era. However, such research has seldom explored the students’ entire EFL (English as a foreign language) learning process and mechanism from the perspective of learners within this model. This study therefore used the 3P (presage, process and product) teaching and learning theory to explore the mediating role of learning methods (i.e.... Читать дальше...

Physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep in the Thai population: A compositional data analysis including 135,824 participants from two national time-use surveys

Plos.org

by Nucharapon Liangruenrom, Dorothea Dumuid, Zeljko Pedisic

Purpose

To determine the amounts of time spent in physical activity (PA), sedentary behaviour (SB), and sleep in the Thai population, as well as their sociodemographic correlates and changes over time.

Methods

We analysed cross-sectional data collected in a population-representative, stratified random sample of 135,824 Thais aged 10 years and over as part of the two most recent Thai National time-use surveys (2009 and 2015). Читать дальше...
