Assam Christian body condemns church survey, seeks Himanta’s help

The United Christian Forum (UCF) has written to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma requesting his intervention to stop the police from "mentally harassing" the church authorities and the Christian community in Upper Assam's Golaghat district. Seven German nationals were detained in Golaghat last year for carrying out missionary works without proper visas.

Mother, son ‘trafficked’ from Guwahati, traced in Rajasthan

A 22-year-old woman and her three-year-old child were suspected to have been trafficked to Rajasthan's Churu district on Monday. They had gone missing from Guwahati's Satgaon area on January 16. Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah said the woman and her child have been rescued with the help of the Rajasthan Police and will soon be brought back to Guwahati to reunite with their family. Assam cracks down on men who have married under-14 girls

The Assam Cabinet on Monday directed the state police to launch a crackdown on men who have married girls below the age of 14 and arrest them under the Pocso Act while those who have married girls in the 14 to 18 age group will be arrested under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006. Atul Gupta, one of the three Gupta brothers now in self-exile in Dubai, has lost a high court bid to get a new passport from the South African government. Atul, Ajay, and Rajesh Gupta are accused of siphoning billions of rands from South African parastatals through their close association with former president Jacob Zuma.
