Plos.org

by Diane H. Felmlee, Chris Julien, Sara C. Francisco

The 2020 Vice-Presidential debate afforded the opportunity to examine online reactions toward a woman of color, Kamala Harris, and a white man, Mike Pence, as they vied for the same position. We collected tweets from the Twitter API related to Harris and Pence, mainly using neutral hashtags. We examined keywords for gender and race slurs and conducted a multivariate analysis of tweet sentiment. Gender and racial slurs surface in both Harris and Pence datasets... Читать дальше...

Awareness, understanding, and interest in personalized medicine: A cross-sectional survey study of college students

by Yingke Xu, Qing Wu

Introduction

Personalized Medicine (PM) holds great potential in healthcare. A few existing surveys have investigated awareness, understanding, and interest regarding PM in the general public; however, studies investigating college students’ opinions about PM are lacking. This study aimed to evaluate the college student’s awareness, understanding, and interest in PM, and their opinion was also analyzed by their gender and major.

Farmers’ beliefs and concerns about climate change, and their adaptation behavior to combat climate change in Saudi Arabia

Plos.org

by Muhammad I. Azeem, Bader Alhafi Alotaibi

Climate change threatens the existence of humankind on the planet Earth. Owing to its arid climate and poor natural resources base, Saudi Arabia is particularly susceptible to the negative impact of ongoing climate change. Farmers’ understanding of this global phenomenon is extremely important as it may help determine their adaptation behavior. This study was designed to analyze farmers’ beliefs and concerns about climate change as well as their views about adaptation different obstacles. Читать дальше...

Ac-YVAD-cmk ameliorated sevoflurane-induced cognitive dysfunction and revised mitophagy impairment

Plos.org

by Du Zheng, Hongwei Wang, Youfa Zhou, Yeru Chen, Gang Chen

It is common for elderly patients to develop postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD), but the pathophysiological mechanisms have not yet been fully explored. NLRP3 inflammasome activation and mitophagy impairment was involved in neurodegenerative disease. This study investigated the interaction of NLRP3 inflammasome and mitophagy in sevoflurane-induced cognitive dysfunction. We found that sevoflurane induced cleaved caspase-1 level... Analysis of regulatory sequences in exosomal DNA of NANOGP8

Plos.org

by Manjusha Vaidya, Jonhoi Smith, Melvin Field, Kiminobu Sugaya

Exosomes participate in intercellular communication by transporting functionally active molecules. Such cargo from the original cells comprising proteins, micro-RNA, mRNA, single-stranded (ssDNA) and double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) molecules pleiotropically transforms the target cells. Although cancer cells secrete exosomes carrying a significant level of DNA capable of modulating oncogene expression in a recipient cell, the regulatory mechanism is unknown. Читать дальше...

The dawn of relaxed phylogenetics

Plos.org

by Jacob L. Steenwyk, Antonis Rokas

Tracing the history of evolution across time is a primary goal of evolutionary biology. The 2006 publication of a landmark study on relaxed phylogenetics in PLOS Biology enabled biologists to shed light on evolution’s tempo and shaped the future of evolutionary studies. In 2006, a landmark study on relaxed phylogenetics was published in PLOS Biology. This Perspective discusses how relaxed phylogenetics has influenced the field of evolutionary biology by...
