Sperm morphology and forward motility are indicators of reproductive success and are not age- or condition-dependent in a captive breeding population of endangered snake

Plos.org

by Mark R. Sandfoss, Steve Reichling, Beth M. Roberts

The relationship between male ejaculate traits and reproductive success is an important consideration for captive breeding programs. A recovery plan for the endangered Louisiana pinesnake includes captive breeding for the release of young to the wild. Semen was collected from twenty captive breeding male snakes and ejaculate traits of motility, morphology, and membrane viability were measured for each male. Semen traits were analyzed in... Ratio of extracellular water to intracellular water and simplified creatinine index as predictors of all-cause mortality for patients receiving hemodialysis

Plos.org

by Takahiro Yajima, Kumiko Yajima

The bioelectrical impedance analysis-measured ratio of extracellular water (ECW) to intracellular water (ICW) reflects fluid volume and malnutrition. It may be an indicator of protein-energy wasting and muscle wasting in hemodialysis patients. We examined the association between the ECW/ICW ratio and simplified creatinine index, which is a new surrogate marker of protein-energy wasting and muscle wasting, and whether their combination can accurately predict mortality. Changes in the bacterial community colonizing extracted and non-extracted tannin-rich plants in the rumen of dromedary camels

Plos.org

by Alaa Emara Rabee, Taha Abd El Rahman, Mebarek Lamara

Leguminous trees and saltbushes provide potential alternatives to conventional feeds to overcome feed deficiency in arid and semi-arid countries. However, these plants are rich in antinutritional factors that have adverse effects on rumen microbiota and the host- animal. Some rumen microbiota detoxifies plants’ secondary metabolites; thus, understanding plant-microbe interaction in the rumen could improve the plants’ utilization. This... Читать дальше...

Humans peeing: Justice-involved women’s access to toilets in public spaces

Plos.org

by Amy B. Smoyer, Adam Pittman, Peter Borzillo

Justice-involved women face myriad challenges as they negotiate the terms of community supervision and manage the long-term implications and stigma of living with a criminal record. Major tasks that women juggle include securing safe, affordable housing, finding and retaining employment, accessing physical and mental health care (including substance use treatment), and handling relationships with family, friends, children, and intimate partners. An effective emotion tendency perception model in empathic dialogue

Plos.org

by Jiancu Chen, Siyuan Yang, Jiang Xiong, Yiping Xiong

The effectiveness of open-domain dialogue systems depends heavily on emotion. In dialogue systems, previous models primarily detected emotions by looking for emotional words embedded in sentences. However, they did not precisely quantify the association of all words with emotions, which has led to a certain bias. To overcome this issue, we propose an emotion tendency perception model. The model uses an emotion encoder to accurately quantify the emotional tendencies of all words. Читать дальше...

Effects of a financial incentive scheme for dementia care on medical and long-term care expenditures: A propensity score–matched analysis using LIFE study data

Plos.org

by Jun Kawabata, Haruhisa Fukuda

Objective

Japan introduced a financial incentive scheme in April 2016 to improve hospital-based dementia care, but its effectiveness remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the scheme’s impact on medical and long-term care (LTC) expenditures, as well as on changes in care needs levels and daily living independence levels among older persons one year after hospital discharge.

Methods

We linked medical and LTC claims databases, and retrospectively... Читать дальше...

Player involvement as a result of difficulty: An introductory study to test the suitability of the motivational intensity approach to video game research

Plos.org

by Paweł Strojny, Agnieszka Strojny, Krzysztof Rębilas

Motivational Intensity Theory could serve as a useful framework in the process of analyzing and optimizing a user’s involvement in computer games. However, it has not yet been used in this way. Its main advantage is that it makes clear predictions regarding the relations between difficulty level, motivation and commitment. The current study aimed to test whether the postulates of this theory may be useful in the process of game development. Читать дальше...

Host Cell Rap1b mediates cAMP-dependent invasion by Trypanosoma cruzi

Plos.org

by Gabriel Ferri, Daniel Musikant, Martin M. Edreira

Trypanosoma cruzi cAMP-mediated invasion has long been described, however, the detailed mechanism of action of the pathway activated by this cyclic nucleotide still remains unknown. We have recently demonstrated a crucial role for Epac in the cAMP-mediated invasion of the host cell. In this work, we gathered evidence indicating that the cAMP/Epac pathway is activated in different cells lines. In accordance, data collected from pull-down... Читать дальше...
