Relationship between stair ascent gait speed, bone density and gait characteristics of postmenopausal women

Plos.org

by Ali Dostan, Catherine A. Dobson, Natalie Vanicek

Stair ascent is a biomechanically challenging task for older women. Bone health may affect gait stability during stair walking. This study investigated the gait biomechanics associated with stair ascent in a group of postmenopausal women in relation to walking speed and bone health, quantified by T-score. Forty-five healthy women (mean (SD) age: 67 (14) years), with bone density ranging from healthy to osteoporotic (T-score range +1 to -3)... Читать дальше...

Gender gaps in Mathematics and Language: The bias of competitive achievement tests

Plos.org

by Oscar Arias, Catalina Canals, Alejandra Mizala, Francisco Meneses

This research paper examines the extent to which high-stakes competitive tests affect gender gaps in standardized tests of Mathematics and Language. To this end, we estimate models that predict students’ results in two national standardized tests: a test that does not affect students’ educational trajectory, and a second test that determines access to the most selective universities in Chile. We used data from different gender twins who took these tests. Читать дальше...

A real data-driven simulation strategy to select an imputation method for mixed-type trait data

Plos.org

by Jacqueline A. May, Zeny Feng, Sarah J. Adamowicz

Missing observations in trait datasets pose an obstacle for analyses in myriad biological disciplines. Considering the mixed results of imputation, the wide variety of available methods, and the varied structure of real trait datasets, a framework for selecting a suitable imputation method is advantageous. We invoked a real data-driven simulation strategy to select an imputation method for a given mixed-type (categorical, count, continuous) target dataset. Читать дальше...

Are bioplastics the solution to the plastic pollution problem?

Plos.org

by Sandra Pascoe Ortiz

We live our lives immersed in plastic pollution: a problem that is becoming more acute. Viable alternatives that can reduce plastic pollution are being sought. Could bioplastics be the hoped-for solution to this problem? Bioplastics have been championed as a potential solution to the problem of plastic waste. This Perspective looks at the pros and cons of bioplastics and whether they can live up to their promise.

A deep hierarchy of predictions enables online meaning extraction in a computational model of human speech comprehension

Plos.org

by Yaqing Su, Lucy J. MacGregor, Itsaso Olasagasti, Anne-Lise Giraud

Understanding speech requires mapping fleeting and often ambiguous soundwaves to meaning. While humans are known to exploit their capacity to contextualize to facilitate this process, how internal knowledge is deployed online remains an open question. Here, we present a model that extracts multiple levels of information from continuous speech online. The model applies linguistic and nonlinguistic knowledge to speech processing... Читать дальше...

NASA’s Webb Spots Swirling, Gritty Clouds on Remote Planet

Nasa.gov

Researchers observing with NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope have pinpointed silicate cloud features in a distant planet’s atmosphere. The team, led by Brittany Miles of the University of Arizona, also made extraordinarily clear detections of water, methane and carbon monoxide with Webb’s data, and found evidence of carbon dioxide.
