HAPmini: 2D haptic feedback generation using single actuator device

Plos.org

by Hwan Kim, Kyung Hoon Hyun

This study aims to explore a feasible form of a haptic device for common users. We propose HAPmini, a novel graspable haptic device that enhances the user’s touch interaction. To achieve this enhancement, the HAPmini is designed with low mechanical complexity, few actuators, and a simple structure, while still providing force and tactile feedback to users. Despite having a single solenoid-magnet actuator and a simple structure, the HAPmini can provide haptic feedback... Читать дальше...

Study investigating executive function in schizophrenia patients and their unaffected siblings

Plos.org

by Feifei Xu, Zhenping Xian

Introduction

Schizophrenia (SCZ) is characterized by widespread cognitive impairments, such as executive functions. Most of the available research indicate that executive impairment has a certain genetic predisposition. Shared neuropathological characteristics of patients with SCZ and their siblings may reveal intermediate behavioral phenotypes that can be used to further characterize the illness.

Methods

Our study involved 32 SCZ patients, 32 unaffected siblings (US)... Читать дальше...

Excellence of the closed intensive care unit system in critically ill surgical patients

Plos.org

by Seung Min Baik, Na Rae Yang, Tae Yoon Kim, Kyung Sook Hong

Background

Despite reports that the closed intensive care unit (ICU) system improves clinical outcomes, it has not been widely applied for various reasons. This study aimed to propose a better ICU system for critically ill patients by comparing the experience of open surgical ICU (OSICU) and closed surgical ICU (CSICU) systems in the same institution.

Methods and findings

Our institution converted the ICU system from “open” to “closed” in February 2020... Читать дальше...

Strengthened social ties in disasters: Threat-awe encourages interdependent worldviews via powerlessness

Plos.org

by Ryota Takano, Michio Nomura

Threat-awe, a negatively valenced variant of awe, is thought to strengthen social ties among community members. However, few empirical studies have examined the social functions of threat-awe. This study investigated whether threat-awe is linked to interdependent worldviews through feelings of powerlessness in comparison with positive awe. After remembering and describing their experiences of positive-or threat-awe, 486 Japanese participants reported on items regarding a small self... Читать дальше...

Daylights with high melanopsin stimulation appear reddish in fovea and greenish in periphery

Plos.org

by Hirokuni Higashi, Katsunori Okajima

Melanopsin reportedly contributes to brightness and color appearance in photopic vision in addition to cone photoreceptor cells. However, the relationship between the contribution of melanopsin to color appearance and retinal location is unclear. Herein, we generated metameric daylights (5000 K/6500 K/8000 K) with different melanopsin stimulations while keeping the size and colorimetric values intact and measured the color appearance of the stimuli in the fovea and periphery. A qualitative case study of community experiences with Tungiasis in high prevalence villages of Bungoma County, Kenya: “The whole body aches and the jiggers are torturing me!

Plos.org

by Åse Walle Mørkve, Jackline Sitienei, Graziella Van den Bergh

Introduction

Tungiasis is a painful skin infection caused by a flea called Tunga Penetrans/jiggers, which enters the epidermis of humans and animals. If untreated it may result in bacterial infection, sepsis, necrosis, and disability. In Kenya, it is estimated that 4% of the population suffer from jigger infestation. The aim of this study was to contribute with knowledge about the experiences of those affected, perceived causes and local coping strategies... Читать дальше...

Dynamics and stage-specificity of between-population gene expression divergence in the Drosophila melanogaster larval fat body

Plos.org

by Amanda Glaser-Schmitt, John Parsch

Gene expression variation is pervasive across all levels of organismal organization, including development. Few studies, however, have examined variation in developmental transcriptional dynamics among populations, or how it contributes to phenotypic divergence. Indeed, the evolution of gene expression dynamics when both the evolutionary and temporal timescale are comparatively short remains relatively uncharacterized. Here, we examined coding and non-coding... Читать дальше...

Casein kinase 1 gamma regulates oxidative stress response via interacting with the NADPH dual oxidase complex

Plos.org

by Yiman Hu, Zhaofa Xu, Qian Pan, Long Ma

Oxidative stress response is a fundamental biological process mediated by conserved mechanisms. The identities and functions of some key regulators remain unknown. Here, we report a novel role of C. elegans casein kinase 1 gamma CSNK-1 (also known as CK1γ or CSNK1G) in regulating oxidative stress response and ROS levels. csnk-1 interacted with the bli-3/tsp-15/doxa-1 NADPH dual oxidase genes via genetic nonallelic noncomplementation to affect C. elegans survival in oxidative stress. Synthetic biology: Learning the way toward high-precision biological design

Plos.org

by Shohei Kitano, Ciai Lin, Jee Loon Foo, Matthew Wook Chang

Since its inception, synthetic biology has overcome many technical barriers but is at a crossroads for high-precision biological design. Devising ways to fully utilize big biological data may be the key to achieving greater heights in synthetic biology.
