Extinction Coalition

The New York Review of Books

On New Year’s Eve, the British arm of Extinction Rebellion posted a statement to its website: “WE QUIT.” The headline was a provocation more than a promise, but it did herald a change in emphasis from the tactics that made the movement for direct climate action famous. “This year,” the statement read, “we prioritise attendance […]

Confused About Mifepristone’s Status? That’s Exactly What Republicans Want

The New Republic

Headlines announced the Supreme Court’s ruling on a case challenging the accessibility of mifepristone last week as if the Court was affirming abortion access. “Supreme Court Ensures, for Now, Broad Access to Abortion Pill,” read one. “Supreme Court’s move on abortion pill in line with majority of Americans,” proclaimed another, referring correctly to polls showing that most Americans oppose medication abortion bans.

Guess Which 2020 Biden State Democratic Insiders Are Worried About Holding? It May Surprise You.

The New Republic

It’s early, but the indicators suggest that the 2024 presidential race will once again come down to Joe Biden versus Donald Trump. Biden’s approval numbers may be lagging, and people may think he’s too old. But still, there’s plenty for Democrats to like about such a matchup. There’s no sign that Trump’s legal woes will go away or get better any time soon, if ever. Trump is still wildly unpopular, and as attention shifts to the presidential election, voters will remember how exhausting Trump can be. Читать дальше...

An Intimate Portrait of a Village Torn Apart by Politics

The New Republic

Toward the end of writer-director Cristian Mungiu’s R.M.N. comes a virtuosic 15-minute crowd scene worthy of a Bruegel painting. Throughout, the camera holds still, while alternating surges of outrage, alarm, approval, and sneering laughter roil its wide, tightly packed human landscape. The crowd often seems to have its own animating logic, but it’s of course made up of individuals, mumbling and shouting across one another in their various languages (Romanian, Hungarian, French) and participating in their own small... Don’t Make Dianne Feinstein Resign. Just Get Her to the Senate by Any Means Necessary.

The New Republic

It was June 10, 1964, and Clair Engle was dying. The first-term California senator was a blunt and flamboyant liberal, but now he was confined to a wheelchair and had trouble with words. Nonetheless, on this day, his aides wheeled him out onto the floor of the U.S. Senate so that he could cast one of the most important votes in the chamber’s history—and Engle did so not with his voice, but with an unforgettable gesture.

Social Conservatives Are in Charge Now

The New Republic

Keeping the government out of the lives of its citizens has long been a stated goal of conservatives—a goal that has existed in tension with the idea, also popular among conservatives, that the state should take an active role in shaping and preserving “traditional institutions” like the nuclear family. The particular vision of family they offer may appear benign but is linked with a disturbingly retrograde view of gender, sexuality, reproductive rights, and American history more broadly—and it... Don’t Look Now, but a Bipartisan Plan to Rein in the Supreme Court Has Arrived

The New Republic

With Supreme Court justices under increasing scrutiny for a slew of potential ethics violations, efforts to require the nation’s highest judicial authority to adopt a formal code of conduct are gaining momentum in Congress. Although district and appellate court judges are bound by a code of ethics, Supreme Court justices are subject to no such standards, with no official process for investigating complaints absent impeachment.

Max Greenfield on Schmidt's hutch, 'Succession,' and why his daughter isn't allowed on TikTok

Mashable

The first words Max Greenfield says to me are veiled under a thin layer of playful sarcasm: "Looks like you got some cool pens back there." Indeed, I do; we're chatting over Zoom, and on the wall behind me are dozens of pens and colored pencils, sorted into cups by color. The setup is a little on-the-nose, given that we're here to discuss the actor and author's collaboration with stationery giant Paper Mate.
