Is teenage parenthood associated with early use of disability pension? Evidence from a longitudinal study

Plos.org

by Fredinah Namatovu, Erling Häggström Gunfridsson, Lotta Vikström

Background

Over the past decades the number of young people using disability pensions (DP) has gradually increased in Europe but the reasons for this change are poorly understood. We hypothesize that teenage parenthood could be associated with an increased risk of receiving early DP. The aim of this study was to examine the association between having a first child at age 13–19 and receiving DP at age 20–42 (here called early DP). Читать дальше...

The use of patient sitters at a Swiss hospital: A retrospective observational study

Plos.org

by Iris Kramer, Maria Schubert

Objective

Patient sitters are frequently used in acute care hospitals to provide one-to-one care for agitated or disorientated patients to assure the safety and well-being of patients. However, there is still a lack of evidence on the use of patient sitters, especially in Switzerland. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe and explore the use of patient sitters in a Swiss acute care hospital.

Methods

In this retrospective, observational study... Читать дальше...

Associations of water contact frequency, duration, and activities with schistosome infection risk: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Plos.org

by Fabian Reitzug, Julia Ledien, Goylette F. Chami

Background

Schistosomiasis is a water-borne parasitic disease which affects over 230 million people globally. The relationship between contact with open freshwater bodies and the likelihood of schistosome infection remains poorly quantified despite its importance for understanding transmission and parametrising transmission models.

Methods

We conducted a systematic review to estimate the average effect of water contact duration, frequency... Читать дальше...

Development of AlissAID system targeting GFP or mCherry fusion protein

Plos.org

by Yoshitaka Ogawa, Kohei Nishimura, Keisuke Obara, Takumi Kamura

Conditional control of target proteins using the auxin-inducible degron (AID) system provides a powerful tool for investigating protein function in eukaryotes. Here, we established an Affinity-linker based super-sensitive auxin-inducible degron (AlissAID) system in budding yeast by using a single domain antibody (a nanobody). In this system, target proteins fused with GFP or mCherry were degraded depending on a synthetic auxin, 5-Adamantyl-IAA (5-Ad-IAA). Читать дальше...

Recall DNA methylation levels at low coverage sites using a CNN model in WGBS

Plos.org

by Ximei Luo, Yansu Wang, Quan Zou, Lei Xu

DNA methylation is an important regulator of gene transcription. WGBS is the gold-standard approach for base-pair resolution quantitative of DNA methylation. It requires high sequencing depth. Many CpG sites with insufficient coverage in the WGBS data, resulting in inaccurate DNA methylation levels of individual sites. Many state-of-arts computation methods were proposed to predict the missing value. However, many methods required either other omics datasets or other cross-sample data. Читать дальше...

Armored Core 6 is the least surprising FromSoft game I've ever seen

Rock Paper Shotgun

LA is an amazing, if tremendously grey place. Everywhere you go, there are grey skyscrapers touching the clouds, so they all look like the concrete's puffing on numerous cigarettes. More often than not, cracked paving gives way to an empty lot or a vacuous car park, often with one guy slumped in a little booth ensuring it stays as grey as possible. So, what better way to commemorate grey than with a look at its president, Armored Core 6: Fires Of Rubicon?
