Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has picked a longtime aide to serve as the state’s second acting attorney general following Republican Ken Paxton’s historic impeachment on allegations of misconduct and crimes. The governor’s office said Monday that Angela Colmenero will step in as the state’s top lawyer on an interim basis starting Friday while Paxton awaits a trial in the state Senate. Bill Shipp, a journalist who covered politics in Georgia for more than 50 years, has died at age 89. No cause of death has been released. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck Monday at a shallow depth of six miles (10 kilometers). A mistrial has been declared in the trial of a Massachusetts man charged with killing a police officer and an innocent bystander after the jury couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict. Norfolk Superior Court Judge Beverly Cannone announced the mistrial on Monday after two weeks of jury deliberations. Emanuel Lopes pleaded not guilty to 11 charges, including two counts of murder.
