Texas governor names second interim attorney general ahead of Ken Paxton's impeachment trial

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has picked a longtime aide to serve as the state’s second acting attorney general following Republican Ken Paxton’s historic impeachment on allegations of misconduct and crimes. The governor’s office said Monday that Angela Colmenero will step in as the state’s top lawyer on an interim basis starting Friday while Paxton awaits a trial in the state Senate. Bill Shipp, longtime chronicler of Georgia politics, dead at 89

Bill Shipp, a journalist who covered politics in Georgia for more than 50 years, has died at age 89. No cause of death has been released. Shipp first gained notice in 1953 as an editor of the University of Georgia’s student newspaper writing articles criticizing the refusal to admit Black applicant Horace Ward to the university’s law school. Shipp resigned under pressure and entered the U.S. Army. He returned in 1956 to work for The Atlanta Constitution, covering civil rights and politics. Shipp rose to be a preeminent journalist... 6.6 magnitude quake strikes in the Atlantic Ocean near the northern Caribbean; no damage is reported

A 6.6 magnitude earthquake has struck in the open Atlantic Ocean and caused some buildings to lightly sway in the northern Caribbean. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck Monday at a shallow depth of six miles (10 kilometers). The epicenter was located some 170 miles (274 kilometers) north-northeast of Antigua and Barbuda. The earthquake was felt on several islands, including Puerto Rico. No damage was immediately reported.

A mistrial has been declared in the trial of a Massachusetts man charged with killing a police officer and an innocent bystander after the jury couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict. Norfolk Superior Court Judge Beverly Cannone announced the mistrial on Monday after two weeks of jury deliberations. Emanuel Lopes pleaded not guilty to 11 charges, including two counts of murder.
