Effect of any form of steroids in comparison with that of other medications on the duration of olfactory dysfunction in patients with COVID-19: A systematic review of randomized trials and quasi-experimental studies

Plos.org

by Phyo Zin Winn, Thein Hlaing, Kyaw Myo Tun, Seim Lei Lei

Background

The life quality of about two-thirds of patients with COVID-19 is affected by related olfactory dysfunctions. The negative impact of olfactory dysfunction ranged from the decreased pleasure of eating to impaired quality of life. This research aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the effects of corticosteroid treatments by comparing that to other currently available treatments and interventions.

Going the extra mile at work: Relationships between working conditions and discretionary work effort

Plos.org

by Wei-hsin Yu, Janet Chen-Lan Kuo

Despite the implications of work effort for earnings inequality, rigorous and comprehensive analyses of how work conditions affect people’s tendency to exert extra work effort are rare. Using two waves of data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997, this study examines how individuals’ discretionary work effort—i.e., effort in excess of what is required—changes with their work time, the tangible and intangible rewards from their jobs, and the social contexts of their occupations. Comprehensive intervention for reducing stigma of autism spectrum disorders: Incorporating the experience of simulated autistic perception and social contact

Plos.org

by Masaki Tsujita, Miho Homma, Shin-ichiro Kumagaya, Yukie Nagai

Stigma of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is a crucial factor leading to a lower quality of life for individuals with ASD. This research evaluated an intervention effect for the stigma through an experience of simulated autistic visual perception and video-based social contact. The intervention was conducted as an experiential workshop for the ASD simulator. Participants (N = 217; 156 women, 61 men; a mean age of 41.3) voluntarily attended the workshop. Читать дальше...

Personal values and people’s attitudes toward older adults

Plos.org

by Joelle H. Fong, Ting-Yan Wang

Background

We examine the relationship between people’s personal values and their attitudes toward older adults. In addition to the two conventionally-used measures of personal values (agency subdimension and communion subdimension), we distinguish across 10 different value types and explore how each impacts attitude.

Methods

We use data from the World Values Survey for three aging Asian societies, namely Japan (N = 2448), Singapore (N = 1972), and Hong Kong PRC (N = 1000). Читать дальше...

Estimating the allocation of land to business

Plos.org

by Michiel N. Daams

This paper is uniquely focused on mapping business land in satellite imagery, with the aim to introduce a standardized approach to estimating how much land in an observed area is allocated to business. Business land and control categories of land are defined and operationalized in a straightforward setting of pixel-based classification. The resultant map as well as information from a sample-based quantification of the map’s accuracy are used jointly to estimate business land’s total area more precisely. Читать дальше...

Reproducibility of knee extensor and flexor contraction velocity in healthy men and women assessed using tensiomyography: A registered report

Plos.org

by Georg Langen, Christine Lohr, Olaf Ueberschär, Michael Behringer

Background

Tensiomyography measures the radial displacement of a muscle during an electrically evoked twitch contraction. Different concepts to determine the rate of displacement (Vc) from the maximum twitch exist, but information on their reproducibility is scarce. Further, different inter-stimuli intervals during progressive stimulation are used, but the effect of different intervals on Vc is unclear.

Within-subject variation of HbA1c: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Plos.org

by Alex Gough, Alice Sitch, Erica Ferris, Tom Marshall

Background

Glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) measurement is used to diagnose and to guide treatment of diabetes mellitus. Within-subject variability in measured HbA1c affects its clinical utility and interpretation, but no comprehensive systematic review has described within-subject variability.

Methods

A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed of within-subject variability of HbA1c. Multiple databases were searched... Читать дальше...

Depression severity is associated with reduced pleasantness of observed social touch and fewer current intimate touch experiences

Plos.org

by Victoria C. Tinker, Paula D. Trotter, Charlotte Krahé

Depression is associated with loss of pleasure in previously enjoyed activities and withdrawal from social interactions. Depression alters the perception of social cues, but it is currently unclear whether this extends to social touch. In the current cross-sectional study, we explored the association between depression severity, perceived pleasantness of observed social touch, and general longing for touch. For observed touch, we contrasted videos of slow touch (1-10cm/s)... Читать дальше...
