Analysis of News Media-Reported Snakebite Envenoming in Nepal during 2010–2022

Plos.org

by Deb P. Pandey, Narayan B. Thapa

Background

Snakebite envenoming is a well-known medical emergency in the Terai of Nepal in particular. However, there is an epidemiological knowledge gap. The news media data available online provide substantial information on envenomings. Assessing this information can be a pristine approach for understanding snakebite epidemiology and conducting knowledge-based interventions. We firstly analyzed news media-reported quantitative information on conditions under which bites occur... Читать дальше...

Myc-regulated miRNAs modulate p53 expression and impact animal survival under nutrient deprivation

Plos.org

by María P. Gervé, Juan A. Sánchez, María C. Ingaramo, Andrés Dekanty

The conserved transcription factor Myc regulates cell growth, proliferation and apoptosis, and its deregulation has been associated with human pathologies. Although specific miRNAs have been identified as fundamental components of the Myc tumorigenic program, how Myc regulates miRNA biogenesis remains controversial. Here we showed that Myc functions as an important regulator of miRNA biogenesis in Drosophila by influencing both miRNA gene expression and processing. Читать дальше...

Kar4 is required for the normal pattern of meiotic gene expression

Plos.org

by Zachory M. Park, Matthew Remillard, Ethan Belnap, Mark D. Rose

Kar4p, the yeast homolog of the mammalian methyltransferase subunit METTL14, is required for efficient mRNA m6A methylation, which regulates meiotic entry. Kar4p is also required for a second seemingly non-catalytic function during meiosis. Overexpression of the early meiotic transcription factor, IME1, can bypass the requirement for Kar4p in meiotic entry but the additional overexpression of the translational regulator, RIM4, is required to permit sporulation in kar4Δ/Δ.

Prediction of DNA Methylation based on Multi-dimensional feature encoding and double convolutional fully connected convolutional neural network

Plos.org

by Wenxing Hu, Lixin Guan, Mengshan Li

DNA methylation takes on critical significance to the regulation of gene expression by affecting the stability of DNA and changing the structure of chromosomes. DNA methylation modification sites should be identified, which lays a solid basis for gaining more insights into their biological functions. Existing machine learning-based methods of predicting DNA methylation have not fully exploited the hidden multidimensional information in DNA gene sequences... Читать дальше...

Neural network models for influenza forecasting with associated uncertainty using Web search activity trends

Plos.org

by Michael Morris, Peter Hayes, Ingemar J. Cox, Vasileios Lampos

Influenza affects millions of people every year. It causes a considerable amount of medical visits and hospitalisations as well as hundreds of thousands of deaths. Forecasting influenza prevalence with good accuracy can significantly help public health agencies to timely react to seasonal or novel strain epidemics. Although significant progress has been made, influenza forecasting remains a challenging modelling task. In this paper... Читать дальше...

Switching state-space modeling of neural signal dynamics

Plos.org

by Mingjian He, Proloy Das, Gladia Hotan, Patrick L. Purdon

Linear parametric state-space models are a ubiquitous tool for analyzing neural time series data, providing a way to characterize the underlying brain dynamics with much greater statistical efficiency than non-parametric data analysis approaches. However, neural time series data are frequently time-varying, exhibiting rapid changes in dynamics, with transient activity that is often the key feature of interest in the data. Stationary... Structural identifiability of biomolecular controller motifs with and without flow measurements as model output

Plos.org

by Eivind S. Haus, Tormod Drengstig, Kristian Thorsen

Controller motifs are simple biomolecular reaction networks with negative feedback. They can explain how regulatory function is achieved and are often used as building blocks in mathematical models of biological systems. In this paper we perform an extensive investigation into structural identifiability of controller motifs, specifically the so–called basic and antithetic controller motifs. Structural identifiability analysis is a useful... Читать дальше...

Estimating the epidemic reproduction number from temporally aggregated incidence data: A statistical modelling approach and software tool

Plos.org

by Rebecca K. Nash, Samir Bhatt, Anne Cori, Pierre Nouvellet

The time-varying reproduction number (Rt) is an important measure of epidemic transmissibility that directly informs policy decisions and the optimisation of control measures. EpiEstim is a widely used opensource software tool that uses case incidence and the serial interval (SI, time between symptoms in a case and their infector) to estimate Rt in real-time. The incidence and the SI distribution must be provided at the same temporal resolution... Читать дальше...
