Novel mechanistic insights underlying fungal allergic inflammation

Plos.org

by Yufan Zheng, Eric V. Dang

The worldwide prevalence of asthma and allergic disorders (allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, food allergy) has been steadily rising in recent decades. It is now estimated that up to 20% of the global population is afflicted by an allergic disease, with increasing incidence rates in both high- and low-income countries. The World Allergy Organization estimates that the total economic burden of asthma and allergic rhinitis alone is approximately $21 billion per year. Читать дальше...

Noncanonical Rab9a action supports retromer-mediated endosomal exit of human papillomavirus during virus entry

Plos.org

by Jeongjoon Choi, Daniel DiMaio

Rab GTPases play key roles in controlling intracellular vesicular transport. GTP-bound Rab proteins support vesicle trafficking. Here, we report that, unlike cellular protein cargos, retromer-mediated delivery of human papillomaviruses (HPV) into the retrograde transport pathway during virus entry is inhibited by Rab9a in its GTP-bound form. Knockdown of Rab9a inhibits HPV entry by modulating the HPV-retromer interaction and impairing retromer-mediated endosome-to-Golgi transport of the incoming virus... Читать дальше...

Emotion and motion: Toward emotion recognition based on standing and walking

Plos.org

by Hila Riemer, Joel V. Joseph, Angela Y. Lee, Raziel Riemer

Emotion recognition is key to interpersonal communication and to human–machine interaction. Body expression may contribute to emotion recognition, but most past studies focused on a few motions, limiting accurate recognition. Moreover, emotions in most previous research were acted out, resulting in non–natural motion, which is unapplicable in reality. We present an approach for emotion recognition based on body motion in naturalistic settings... Читать дальше...

Sublethal toxicities of 2,4-dinitrophenol as inferred from online self-reports

Plos.org

by Ali Abdelati, Michele M. Burns, Michael Chary

Introduction

2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) is a mitochondrial toxin sometimes used as a weight loss agent. Reports of fatalities from DNP have been increasing since 2000, suggesting an increase in use. Our understanding of DNP toxicity in humans comes from reports to Poison Control and postmortem analyses, sources that are biased to more extreme presentations. This leads to a gap in our knowledge about the adverse effects of DNP at nonlethal doses. Читать дальше...

COVID-19 and visitation to Central Park, New York City

Plos.org

by Weizhe Weng, Lingxiao Yan, Kevin J. Boyle, George Parsons

Central Park is an iconic feature of New York City, which was the first and one of the hardest hit cities in the United States by the Coronavirus. State-level stay-at-home order, raising COVID-19 cases, as well as the public’s personal concerns regarding exposure to the virus, led to a significant reduction of Central Park visitation. We utilized extensive cellphone tracking data to conduct one of the pioneering empirical studies... Читать дальше...

Use of a scent-detection dog for sea turtle nest monitoring of three sea turtle species in Florida

Plos.org

by Rebekah J. Lindborg, Pepe Peruyero, Blair E. Witherington

Sea turtles are threatened with extinction around the world and rely on sandy beaches for laying their eggs. To protect eggs and locate them for calculation of reproductive success, beach surveyors must find the exact placement of each clutch. Eggs may be buried up to one meter deep under a nest mound several square meters in area. To locate sea turtle eggs, beach surveyors might spend hours searching for these eggs hidden in the sand... The mechanism and effectiveness of mindfulness-based intervention for reducing the psychological distress of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder: A protocol of randomized control trial of ecological momentary intervention and assessment

Plos.org

by Qi Wang, Siu-man Ng, Xiaochen Zhou

Background

Existing studies have unequivocally demonstrated that parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience various stressful daily life events and suffer from psychological distress. Mindfulness level is found to be an effective buffer between parents’ appraisal of stress life events and psychological distress. However, the mechanism behind the function of mindfulness is unclear, and traditional mindfulness-based intervention... Читать дальше...

Modeling the public health impact of voxelotor in the management of sickle cell disease in France

Plos.org

by Frédéric Galacteros, Olivier Ethgen, Maud Beillat

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder in which sickle hemoglobin (HbS) polymerizes, leading to red blood cell sickling and chronic hemolytic anemia, vaso-occlusive crises, and end-organ damage associated with early mortality. Despite standard of care, patients with SCD still experience complications and early mortality, highlighting remaining unmet treatment needs. Voxelotor is a first-in-class HbS polymerization inhibitor... Читать дальше...

Regional effects of China’s monetary policy during the economic transition period: Based on China’s city classification system under the new normal

Plos.org

by Lingyu Tang, Guoju Ai, Zushun Cai

We analyse the regional effects of China’s monetary policy during the economic transition period based on the city classification system under the New Normal. Using panel vector autoregressive (PVAR) models, we examine the differences in the influence of a unified monetary policy on four types of Chinese cities: first-tier, quasi-first-tier, second-tier, and third-tier cities, from perspective of economic output. Based on a comparative analysis of the... Читать дальше...
