A significant number of injectable drug users in Ludhiana, India, have tested positive for Hepatitis C and HIV, according to data from the out patient opioid assisted treatment (OOAT) centre at the civil hospital. Of the 105 injectable drug users registered at the centre between January and August, 56 tested positive for Hepatitis C, 34 tested positive for HIV, and 11 tested positive for Hepatitis B. The disease is curable if detected early, but if left untreated, it can lead to chronic hepatitis and increase the risk of liver cancer.
