Mapping resistance-associated anthelmintic interactions in the model nematode Caenorhabditis elegans

Plos.org

by Elena G. Rehborg, Nicolas J. Wheeler, Mostafa Zamanian

Parasitic nematodes infect billions of people and are mainly controlled by anthelmintic mass drug administration (MDA). While there are growing efforts to better understand mechanisms of anthelmintic resistance in human and animal populations, it is unclear how resistance mechanisms that alter susceptibility to one drug affect the interactions and efficacy of drugs used in combination. Mutations that alter drug permeability across... Читать дальше...

Objects guide human gaze behavior in dynamic real-world scenes

Plos.org

by Nicolas Roth, Martin Rolfs, Olaf Hellwich, Klaus Obermayer

The complexity of natural scenes makes it challenging to experimentally study the mechanisms behind human gaze behavior when viewing dynamic environments. Historically, eye movements were believed to be driven primarily by space-based attention towards locations with salient features. Increasing evidence suggests, however, that visual attention does not select locations with high saliency but operates on attentional units given by the objects in the scene. Читать дальше...

Infer global, predict local: Quantity-relevance trade-off in protein fitness predictions from sequence data

Plos.org

by Lorenzo Posani, Francesca Rizzato, Rémi Monasson, Simona Cocco

Predicting the effects of mutations on protein function is an important issue in evolutionary biology and biomedical applications. Computational approaches, ranging from graphical models to deep-learning architectures, can capture the statistical properties of sequence data and predict the outcome of high-throughput mutagenesis experiments probing the fitness landscape around some wild-type protein. However, how the complexity... Читать дальше...

Dose-response in modulating brain function with transcranial direct current stimulation: From local to network levels

Plos.org

by Ghazaleh Soleimani, Rayus Kupliki, Martin Paulus, Hamed Ekhtiari

Understanding the dose-response relationship is crucial in studying the effects of brain stimulation techniques, such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). The dose-response relationship refers to the relationship between the received stimulation dose and the resulting response, which can be described as a function of the dose at various levels, including single/multiple neurons, clusters, regions, or networks. Ford And UAW Near Historic Deal After Six-Week Strike

Oilprice.com

The United Automobile Workers and Ford Motor Company reached a tentative agreement on a new four-year labor contract on Wednesday night. This comes six weeks after UAW initiated strikes targeting Detroit's Big Three automakers. UAW provided details about the "record contract" with Ford: The agreement grants 25% in base wage increases through April 2028, and will cumulatively raise the top wage by over 30% to more than $40 an hour, and raise the starting wage by 68%, to over $28 an hour. The lowest-paid... Читать дальше...

The interdependence of isoprenoid synthesis and apicoplast biogenesis in malaria parasites

Plos.org

by Megan Okada, Paul A. Sigala

Isoprenoid precursor synthesis is an ancient and fundamental function of plastid organelles and a critical metabolic activity of the apicoplast in Plasmodium malaria parasites [1–3]. Over the past decade, our understanding of apicoplast properties and functions has increased enormously [4], due in large part to our ability to rescue blood-stage parasites from apicoplast-specific dysfunctions by supplementing cultures with isopentenyl pyrophosphate (IPP), a key output of this organelle [5,6]. The intriguing phenomenon of cross-kingdom infections of plant and insect viruses to fungi: Can other animal viruses also cross-infect fungi?

Plos.org

by Ida Bagus Andika, Xinran Cao, Hideki Kondo, Liying Sun

Fungi are highly widespread and commonly colonize multicellular organisms that live in natural environments. Notably, studies on viruses infecting plant-associated fungi have revealed the interesting phenomenon of the cross-kingdom transmission of viruses and viroids from plants to fungi. This implies that fungi, in addition to absorbing water, nutrients, and other molecules from the host, can acquire intracellular parasites that reside in the host. Читать дальше...
