The first battery prototype using hemoglobin is developed

Energy-daily.com

Cordoba, Spain (SPX) Jan 11, 2024 - A team with the Chemical Institute for Energy and the Environment (IQUEMA) at the University of Cordoba has come up with a battery that uses hemoglobin as an electrochemical reaction facilitator, functioning for around 20-30 days.

Hemoglobin is a protein present in red blood cells and is responsible for conveying oxygen from the lungs to the different tissues of the body (and then transferring carbon dioxide the other way around). It has a very high affinity for oxygen and is fundamental for life... Читать дальше...

Solid state battery design charges in minutes, lasts for thousands of cycles

Energy-daily.com

Boston MA (SPX) Jan 11, 2024 - Researchers from the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have developed a new lithium metal battery that can be charged and discharged at least 6,000 times - more than any other pouch battery cell - and can be recharged in a matter of minutes.

The research not only describes a new way to make solid state batteries with a lithium metal anode but also offers new understanding into the materials used for these potentially revolutionary batteries. Читать дальше...

The 3 mistakes you’re making with your dehumidifier and why you should never place it next to a wall

TheSun.co.uk

IT’S the device that everyone’s been buying recently.

And while dehumidifiers can be a brilliant way to deal with condensation and mould, there are some mistakes you can make that make them less effective.

An expert has revealed the three mistakes you’re making that’s causing your dehumidifier to be less effective

One such error is putting the machine next to a wall.

Sarah Dempsey, cleaning expert at MyJobQuote.co.uk, explained that you need to keep the dehumidifier... Читать дальше...

Space Oddity: Uncovering the Origin of the Universe's Rare Radio Circles

Spacedaily.com

San Diego CA (SPX) Jan 09, 2024 - It's not every day astronomers say, "What is that?" After all, most observed astronomical phenomena are known: stars, planets, black holes and galaxies. But in 2019 the newly completed ASKAP (Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder) telescope picked up something no one had ever seen before: radio wave circles so large they contained entire galaxies in their centers.

As the astrophysics community tried to determine what these circles were, they also wanted to know why the circles were. Читать дальше...

NASA's Webb Finds Signs of Possible Aurorae on Isolated Brown Dwarf

Spacedaily.com

Baltimore MD (SPX) Jan 10, 2024 - Astronomers using NASA's James Webb Space Telescope have found a brown dwarf (an object more massive than Jupiter but smaller than a star) with infrared emission from methane, likely due to energy in its upper atmosphere. This is an unexpected discovery because the brown dwarf, W1935, is cold and lacks a host star; therefore, there is no obvious source for the upper atmosphere energy. The team speculates that the methane emission may be due to processes generating aurorae. Читать дальше...

Blob-like home of farthest-known fast radio burst is collection of seven galaxies

Spacedaily.com

Evanston IL (SPX) Jan 10, 2024 - In summer 2022, astronomers detected the most powerful fast radio burst (FRB) ever observed. And coming from a location that dates halfway back to the Big Bang, it also was the farthest known FRB spotted to date. Now, astronomers led by Northwestern University have pinpointed the extraordinary object's birthplace - and it's rather curious, indeed.

Using images from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, the researchers traced the FRB back to not one galaxy but a group of at least seven galaxies. Читать дальше...

NASA's Parker Solar Probe Completes 18th Close Approach to the Sun

Spacedaily.com

Baltimore MD (SPX) Jan 09, 2024 - NASA's Parker Solar Probe completed its 18th close approach to the Sun on Dec. 28, 2023, matching its own distance record by skimming just about 4.51 million miles (7.26 million kilometers) from the solar surface.

The close approach (known as perihelion) occurred at 7:56 p.m. EST, with Parker Solar Probe traveling at 394,736 miles per hour (635,266 kilometers per hour) around the Sun - also matching the speed record for the 17th solar encounter. The milestone... Читать дальше...

Dynamic Point-Pixel Feature Alignment Network: A Leap Forward in 3D Object Detection Technology

Spacedaily.com

Kyoto, Japan (SPX) Jan 11, 2024 - Robotics and autonomous vehicles, key players in the evolving technological landscape, are poised for enhanced safety and efficiency thanks to recent developments in 3D object detection. At the forefront of this innovation is a research team from Ritsumeikan University, Japan, led by Professor Hiroyuki Tomiyama. They have pioneered a novel approach called the Dynamic Point-Pixel Feature Alignment Network (DPPFA-Net), detailed in their recent publication in the IEEE Internet of Things Journal (November 3... New soft robots roll like tires, spin like tops and orbit like moons

Spacedaily.com

Raleigh NC (SPX) Jan 11, 2024 - Researchers have developed a new soft robot design that engages in three simultaneous behaviors: rolling forward, spinning like a record, and following a path that orbits around a central point. The device, which operates without human or computer control, holds promise for developing soft robotic devices that can be used to navigate and map unknown environments.

The new soft robots are called twisted ringbots. They are made of ribbon-like liquid crystal elastomers... Читать дальше...
