What Causes Emphysema And How Is It Treated?
Emphysema is a chronic lung condition that is often part of a broader disease called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is characterized by the damage and destruction of the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs, leading to reduced respiratory function. The primary cause of emphysema is long-term exposure to irritants, typically cigarette smoke. Other factors, such as exposure to air pollution and certain occupational hazards, can also contribute to the development of emphysema.
