Reliability analysis using Limit equilibrium and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics-based method for homogeneous soil slopes

Plos.org

by Xuesong Chu, Jiahui Wen, Liang Li

This paper develops a combined method to predict the volume of sliding mass for homogeneous slopes in an efficient manner. Firstly, the failure surface with minimum factor of safety (FS) in Limit Equilibrium Method is equated to that one determined by Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics algorithm to obtain the threshold displacement value for unstable and stable particles. Secondly, the threshold displacement value is used to identify the volume of sliding mass using SPH. Читать дальше...

Incidence and survival of second primary non-Hodgkin lymphoma: A Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-based cohort study

Plos.org

by Nasha Yu, Weiming Zhang, Xing Zhong, Xiangxiang Song, Wuping Li

Background

The aim of this study was to investigate patient survival and factors associated with survival in second primary non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) compared with the first primary NHL.

Methods

The retrospective cohort study used data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database between 2000 and 2014. Demographic characteristics, histological types, Ann Arbor stage, and treatment information were collected. Читать дальше...

Unveiling Sri Lanka’s brain drain and labour market pressure: A study of macroeconomic factors on migration

Plos.org

by Sandunima Kaluarachchi, Ruwan Jayathilaka

The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of GDP per capita income (GDPPCI), unemployment, higher education (HE), and economic growth (EG) on migration in Sri Lanka. Numerous global and local studies have explored the influence of macroeconomic and socioeconomic factors on migration. In the Sri Lankan context, fewer studies have probed the impact of GDPPCI, unemployment, HE, and EG on migration, particularly concerning brain drain and domestic labour market pressure. Webb & Hubble confirm Universe’s expansion rate

Esa.int

Webb measurements shed new light on a decade-long mystery.

The rate at which the Universe is expanding, known as the Hubble constant, is one of the fundamental parameters for understanding the evolution and ultimate fate of the cosmos. However, a persistent difference, called the Hubble Tension, is seen between the value of the constant measured with a wide range of independent distance indicators and its value predicted from the afterglow of the Big Bang. The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space... Читать дальше...

Declining Demand for EVs Is Weighing on the Nickel Market

Oilprice.com

Nickel prices are proving a headache for miners across the world: oversupply of the metal plus low electric vehicle (EV) demand has created a profit-stealing two-year price slide. Anglo American’s nickel revenues fell by around 23 percent in 2023, according to its latest earnings report. The EBITDA for nickel at Vale fell by 56 percent over the same period, from £1,924mn to £668m.  The nickel price is down 27 percent year on year.  How have prices fallen so far, so quickly? Oversupply from Indonesia... Читать дальше...
