Consumer behavior in the model of the circular economy in the field of handling discarded items

Plos.org

by Otakar Ungerman, Jaroslava Dědková

The circular economy is a way of eliminating the shortage of raw materials that Europe is currently facing. However, it is necessary to explicitly identify the problems that prevent greater involvement in the CE. This article is focused on consumers and how they treat discarded or non-functional items. The aim was to fill the research gap, i.e. to compile a suitable CE model and define a methodology that would ensure the efficient disposal of non-functional or unsuitable items by consumers. An empirical analysis of the demand for family planning satisfied by modern methods among married or in-union women in Nigeria: Application of multilevel binomial logistic modelling technique

Plos.org

by Emomine Odjesa, Friday Ebhodaghe Okonofua

Background

Given the health and economic benefits of family planning (FP), Nigeria’s very low demand for FP satisfied by modern methods (mDFPS) of less than 50% is therefore a major public health concern, especially considering the global target aimed at achieving an mDFPS of at least 75% by year 2030 for all countries. In view of this, together with recognising the possible contextual nature of health outcomes, this study aimed to empirically... Читать дальше...

Cross-asset momentum and the hybrid fund transmission mechanism in China’s stock and bond markets

Plos.org

by Xiaowei Wang, Rui Wang, Yichun Zhang

The allocation of assets across different markets is a crucial element of investment strategy. In this regard, stocks and bonds are two significant assets that form the backbone of multi-asset allocation. Among publicly offered funds (The publicly offered funds in China correspond to the mutual funds in the United States, with different names and details in terms of legal form and sales channels), the stock-bond hybrid fund gives investors a return... Demand side management using optimization strategies for efficient electric vehicle load management in modern power grids

Plos.org

by Manoj Kumar V., Bharatiraja Chokkalingam, Devakirubakaran S.

The Electric Vehicle (EV) landscape has witnessed unprecedented growth in recent years. The integration of EVs into the grid has increased the demand for power while maintaining the grid’s balance and efficiency. Demand Side Management (DSM) plays a pivotal role in this system, ensuring that the grid can accommodate the additional load demand without compromising stability or necessitating costly infrastructure upgrades. In this work... Читать дальше...

Dogs’ social susceptibility is differentially affected by various dog–Human interactions. A study on family dogs, former shelter dogs and therapy dogs

Plos.org

by Anna Kis, Katinka Tóth, Lívia Langner, József Topál

When pre-treated with social stimuli prior to testing, dogs are more susceptible to human influence in a food preference task. This means, after a positive social interaction they are more willing to choose the smaller amount of food indicated by the human, as opposed to their baseline preference for the bigger amount. In the current study we investigate if and how various forms of social interaction modulate choices in the same social susceptibility task... Читать дальше...

Chinese herbal medicine for post-viral fatigue: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials

Plos.org

by Le-Yan Hu, An-Qi Cai, Bo Li, Zheng Li, Jian-Ping Liu, Hui-Juan Cao

Background

Fatigue is a common symptom after viral infection. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) is thought to be a potential effective intervention in relieving fatigue.

Purpose

To assess the effectiveness and safety of CHM for the treatment of post-viral fatigue.

Study design

Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

Methods

The protocol of this systematic review was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42022380356). Читать дальше...

Towards explainable interaction prediction: Embedding biological hierarchies into hyperbolic interaction space

Plos.org

by Domonkos Pogány, Péter Antal

Given the prolonged timelines and high costs associated with traditional approaches, accelerating drug development is crucial. Computational methods, particularly drug-target interaction prediction, have emerged as efficient tools, yet the explainability of machine learning models remains a challenge. Our work aims to provide more interpretable interaction prediction models using similarity-based prediction in a latent space aligned to biological hierarchies. Читать дальше...

AE-GPT: Using Large Language Models to extract adverse events from surveillance reports-A use case with influenza vaccine adverse events

Plos.org

by Yiming Li, Jianfu Li, Jianping He, Cui Tao

Though Vaccines are instrumental in global health, mitigating infectious diseases and pandemic outbreaks, they can occasionally lead to adverse events (AEs). Recently, Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown promise in effectively identifying and cataloging AEs within clinical reports. Utilizing data from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) from 1990 to 2016, this study particularly focuses on AEs to evaluate LLMs’ capability for AE extraction. Читать дальше...

Differential impact of environmental factors on airborne live bacteria and inorganic particles in an underground walkway

Plos.org

by Hiroyuki Yamaguchi, Torahiko Okubo, Eriko Nozaki, Takako Osaki

We previously reported that variations in the number and type of bacteria found in public spaces are influenced by environmental factors. However, based on field survey data alone, whether the dynamics of bacteria in the air change as a result of a single environmental factor or multiple factors working together remains unclear. To address this, mathematical modeling may be applied. We therefore conducted a reanalysis of the... Читать дальше...

Energy evolution mechanism of structural surfaces in sandstones with different dips based on the energy principle

Plos.org

by Yongjiang Yu, Zhiyuan Song, Jiaming Liu, Yuntao Yang, Xu Dong

A uniaxial compression test was conducted on sandstone specimens at various inclination angles to determine the energy evolution characteristics during deformation and damage. Based on the principle of minimum energy dissipation, an intrinsic model incorporating the damage threshold was developed to investigate the mechanical properties of sandstone at different inclination angles, and the energy damage evolution during deformation and damage. Impact of corporate social responsibility on employee loyalty: Mediating role of person-organization fit and employee trust

Plos.org

by Hebo Jin, Xuexiao Li, Guangsen Li

The study explores the impact of employee perceptions of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in improving employee loyalty by examining the direct and indirect role of person-organization fit and employee trust. A convenient sampling technique was employed to collect the data sample. A total of 338 questionnaires were collected at three different China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects in Pakistan. The SmartPLS-3 was used to test the study hypotheses. Читать дальше...

Accessible luminal interface of bovine rectal organoids generated from cryopreserved biopsy tissues

Plos.org

by Minae Kawasaki, Yoko M. Ambrosini

Developing precise species-specific in vitro models that closely resemble in vivo intestinal tissues is essential for advancing our understanding of gastrointestinal physiology and associated diseases. This is especially crucial in examining host-pathogen interactions, particularly in bovines, a known reservoir for microbes and pathogens posing substantial public health threats. This research investigated the viability of producing bovine rectal organoids from cryopreserved tissues. Читать дальше...
