Using network science to examine audio-visual speech perception with a multi-layer graph

Plos.org

by Michael S. Vitevitch, Lorin Lachs

To examine visual speech perception (i.e., lip-reading), we created a multi-layer network (the AV-net) that contained: (1) an auditory layer with nodes representing phonological word-forms and edges connecting words that were phonologically related, and (2) a visual layer with nodes representing the viseme representations of words and edges connecting viseme representations that differed by a single viseme (and additional edges to connect related nodes in the two layers). Network science for museums

Plos.org

by Yuji Yoshimura, Anne Krebs, Carlo Ratti

This paper introduces network science to museum studies. The spatial structure of the museum and the exhibit display largely determine what visitors see and in which order, thereby shaping their visit experience. Despite the importance of spatial properties in museum studies, few scientific tools have been developed to analyze and compare the results across museums. This paper introduces the six habitually used network science indices and assesses their applicability to museum studies. Читать дальше...

The relationship between money supply and inflation in Pakistan

Plos.org

High-dose oral thiamine versus placebo for chronic fatigue in patients with primary biliary cholangitis: A crossover randomized clinical trial

Plos.org

by Palle Bager, Lars Bossen, Rasmus Gantzel, Henning Grønbæk

Background & aims

Fatigue has high negative impact on many patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and treatment options are limited. Recently we showed favorable effects of four weeks of high-dose thiamine treatment on fatigue in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. We aimed to investigate the effect and safety of high-dose (600–1800 mg daily) oral thiamine treatment on chronic fatigue in patients with PBC.

Responsiveness of respiratory function in Parkinson’s Disease to an integrative exercise programme: A prospective cohort study

Plos.org

by Laura McMahon, Denise McGrath, Catherine Blake, Olive Lennon

Introduction

Respiratory disorders are the most common cause of death in Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Conflicting data exist on the aetiology of respiratory dysfunction in PD and few studies examine the effects of exercise-based interventions on respiratory measures. This study was conducted to better understand respiratory dysfunction in PD and to identify measures of dysfunction responsive to an integrative exercise programme. Читать дальше...
