Susceptibility to stress and nature exposure: Unveiling differential susceptibility to physical environments; a randomized controlled trial

Plos.org

by Aaron M. Eisen, Gregory N. Bratman, Hector A. Olvera-Alvarez

Background

Emerging epidemiological evidence indicates nature exposure could be associated with greater health benefits among groups in lower versus higher socioeconomic positions. One possible mechanism underpinning this evidence is described by our framework: (susceptibility) adults in low socioeconomic positions face higher exposure to persistent psychosocial stressors in early life, inducing a pro-inflammatory phenotype... Transient plasma membrane disruption induced calcium waves in mouse and human corneal epithelial cells

Plos.org

by Zhong Chen, Xiaowen Lu, Mitchell A. Watsky

The purpose of this study was to examine transient plasma membrane disruptions (TPMDs) and TPMD-induced Ca++ waves (TPMD Ca++ Wvs) in human and mouse corneal epithelium (HCEC and MCEC). A multi-photon microscope was used to create laser–induced TPMDs in single cultured cells and in intact ex vivo and in vivo MCECs and ex vivo human cornea rim HCECs. Eye rubbing-induced TPMDs were studied by gentle rubbing with a cotton tipped applicator over a closed eyelid in ex vivo and in vivo MCECs. Читать дальше...

Experimental and numerical investigation on the reinforced concrete boundary beam-wall system subjected to axial compression

Plos.org

by Dae-Jin Kim, Jin-Ju Han, Seung-Il Kim

This paper proposes a reinforced concrete (RC) boundary beam-wall system that requires less construction material and a smaller floor height compared to the conventional RC transfer girder system. The structural performance of this system subjected to axial compression was evaluated by performing a structural test on four specimens of 1/2 scale. In addition, three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis was also performed to verify the effectiveness of the boundary beam-wall system. Читать дальше...

A deep learning-based dynamic deformable adaptive framework for locating the root region of the dynamic flames

Plos.org

by Hongkang Tao, Guhong Wang, Jiansheng Liu, Zan Yang

Traditional optical flame detectors (OFDs) in flame detection are susceptible to environmental interference, which will inevitably cause detection errors and miscalculations when confronted with a complex environment. The conventional deep learning-based models can mitigate the interference of complex environments by flame image feature extraction, which significantly improves the precision of flame recognition. However, these models focus... Читать дальше...

Using Museum collections to assess the impact of industrialization on mussel (Mytilus edulis) calcification

Plos.org

by Leanne A. Melbourne, Nathalie F. Goodkin

Mytilus edulis is a commercially and ecologically important species found along the east coast of the United States. Ecologically, M. edulis improves water quality through filtration feeding and provides habitat formation and coastal protection through reef formation. Like many marine calcifiers, ocean warming, and acidification are a growing threat to these organisms—impacting their morphology and function. Museum collections are useful in assessing... Sparsified federated learning with differential privacy for intrusion detection in VANETs based on Fisher Information Matrix

Plos.org

by Rui Chen, Xiaoyu Chen, Jing Zhao

With the continuous development of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET) security, using federated learning (FL) to deploy intrusion detection models in VANET has attracted considerable attention. Compared to conventional centralized learning, FL retains local training private data, thus protecting privacy. However, sensitive information about the training data can still be inferred from the shared model parameters in FL. Differential privacy (DP) is sophisticated technique to mitigate such attacks. Both religious and secular ethics to achieve both happiness and health: Panel data results based on a dynamic theoretical model

Plos.org

by Fabio Zagonari

This paper evaluates the direct and indirect impacts (and their interactions) of individual and social ethics from (primary, secondary, tertiary) education and religion (Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism) on health and happiness in alternative religious contexts (majority and minority religions) and for alternative education policies (gross enrolment and per-student expenditure). It also specifies the time lag for the short-run indirect impact (and its size)... Читать дальше...

Arabic translation and cultural adaptation of a training load and player monitoring in high-level football questionnaire: A cognitive interview study

Plos.org

by Abdulmalek K. Bursais

Background

Understanding the current practice and the associated challenges in applying monitoring tools is essential to improving football performance in the Middle East, thus the purpose was to translate and culturally adapt a published questionnaire that assessed the practice and perception of High-Level football teams toward Training Load and Player Monitoring to be used in the Arabic context, aiming to contribute to the enhancement of football performance, player welfare... Technology empowerment: Digital transformation and enterprise ESG performance—Evidence from China’s manufacturing sector

Plos.org

by Xianyun Wu, Longji Li, Dekuan Liu, Qian Li

In light of the long-term constraints posed by the "dual carbon" objective, can digital technology emerge as a transformative solution for enterprises to embark on a sustainable development trajectory? The existing body of research has yet to reach a consensus. In order to shed further light on the intricate relationship between digital transformation and ESG performance of enterprises, this study empirically examines the mechanisms and boundaries... A standard calibration method based on a symmetric resistance network matrix for galvanic logging instruments

Plos.org

by Yongli Ji, Zhiqiang Li, Jigen Xia, Jiajia Song

An increasing number of measurement electrodes have been designed to satisfy the demand for high-resolution detection using galvanic logging technology in complex formations. The forward modeling response analysis of logging tools has important guiding significance in the design of galvanic logging tools. Based on a three-dimensional finite element numerical simulation method, we established a forward model of galvanic multi-electrodes in a complex formation. Читать дальше...

Effect of care bundles for acute kidney injury: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Plos.org

by Shuzhen Zhang, Yixin Chen, Fangfang Zhou, Lailiang Wang, Qun Luo

Purpose

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is frequent among in-hospital patients with high incidence and mortality. Implementing a series of evidence-based AKI care bundles may improve patient outcomes by reducing changeable standards of care. The aim of this meta-analysis was therefore to appraise the influences of AKI care bundles on patient outcomes.

Materials and methods

We explored three international databases (PubMed... Читать дальше...

Green finance improves enterprises’ environmental, social and governance performance: A two-dimensional perspective based on external financing capability and internal technological innovation

Plos.org

by Hongfeng Zhang, Shuying Wei

This paper takes the establishment of the Green Financial Reform and Innovation Pilot Zone (GFPZ) in 2017 as a natural experiment, adopts the data of a-share industrial listed enterprises in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2010 to 2020, and utilizes the difference-in-differences (DID) method to carry out empirical tests. The results show that (1) GFPZ policy significantly improves the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance of enterprises, and the... Читать дальше...
