Peninsula: Man hit by out-of-control police car dies
REDWOOD CITY— A 25-year-old man struck by an out-of-control Redwood City police cruiser has died, the San Mateo County Coroner confirmed on Saturday.
Alex Camron Hill, of Redwood City, died Oct. 2. He had been struck by the police car on Sept. 18, just before 10 a.m. on El Camino Real near James Avenue.
The officer was responding to a report of a home invasion and lost control of her car and hit Hill, seriously injuring him.
The 12-year-veteran officer was driving with a police K-9 in her vehicle and had been dispatched to the call; a report had come in stating that four masked men were committing a home invasion on the 300 block of Poplar Avenue, police said at the time.
On her way to the call, the officer lost control on the wet road and veered onto the center median, hitting the pedestrian who had been standing there, according to police.
The officer’s car then continued into oncoming traffic, hitting two other cars, before it finally stopped on the sidewalk.
The officer was taken to a hospital as a precaution, while the drivers of the two other cars that were hit were treated at the scene by paramedics. The police dog in the squad car did not appear injured.
