But fans online were shocked by footage they thought was unpopular owner Ashley, who has been staying away from St James’ Park recently amid fan protests over his ownership, was on screen celebrating.
Sky Sports even claimed Ashley’s lookalike was Longstaff’s DAD – and so did fans on Twitter.
Carla Devine tweeted: “MAD how much Longstaff’s Dad looks like Mike Ashley.”
She then added he was the “spitting image” of the Londoner.
While his 19-year-old son’s fairy tale Premier League debut put a huge smile on his face, 45-year-old David’s own sporting exploits are also cause for celebration.
David still plays professional ice hockey for Whitley Warriors.
