Heron's Head Park: Premier bird-watching spot in S.F.
The terminal never materialized, but over the years, the filled land became a salt marsh, home to birds and aquatic life.
In 1999, the area, vastly cleaned up, became Heron's Head Park, with a tidal channel, trails, picnic areas, an ecology center and even a dog play area.
Today, this slice of land, which looks like a heron's head from above, is a premier bird-watching spot.
Information signs describe the terrain and the plants and animals that make their home here.

The salt marsh is home to a plethora of shorebirds and ducks: egrets, cormorants, herons, loons, grebes, avocets, oystercatchers and, of course, the ubiquitous Canada geese.
When you get to India Basin Shoreline Park, you will find more trails to wander, picnic tables, barbecue pits and a playground.
