Mum, 21, told she has brain tumor just days after giving birth to her son
The family of a young mother who was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour two days after she gave birth to her first child say they are not giving up.
Megan Lavery, 21, from Glasgow, was taken ill just hours after her son Roan was born and was admitted to hospital the day before after she was violently sick.
When her condition did not improve after giving birth, doctors investigated further – and delivered the devastating news.
Megan’s mum Denise said: ‘She’d not been well for a few weeks but never did we think that something like this would be wrong with her. If Roan hadn’t been born when he was she wouldn’t be here. He saved her life.’
Since becoming a mum, Megan has undergone four surgeries and was under the knife for nine and a half hours in her most recent operation and doctors have said there is nothing more they can do for her.
Denise said: ‘We are absolutely devastated and I don’t know how we’ve managed to hold it together but the adrenaline has kicked in. We’re taking it every day at a time and we have gone through every emotion possible but we are not going to give up or listen to the doctors.’
The family are now organising a fundraiser to pay for a course of alternative treatment for Megan and support Denise and Megan’s boyfriend, Paul, who have both stopped working to care for her and the family outlook remains resolutely positive.
They’re funding a drug called Penoxal which has given her energy and meant she is able to do things with her son.
Denise said: ‘Megan and Paul made a pact that if she survived they would get married and that is what they are now doing. The family are looking to the future.’
