The Script’s Danny O’Donoghue on dealing with grief, finding fulfilment and turning to music
DANNY O’Donoghue, 39, is the frontman of The Script and was a judge on The Voice UK in 2012 and 2013.
Here, he answers some of Molly Reynolds’ burning questions, like how often he has sex and who his celebrity crush is.
What’s your greatest fear?
A life unfulfilled. It’s taken me being older to realise what’s important, and that’s family, love, loyalty and friendship.
Which word do you overuse?
Shivers. I say it when a song is good or if I meet somebody special.
What’s your worst habit?
Over-analysing things. I don’t suffer from lots of anxiety, but I really want to do my job well so it can come off as being uptight.
Who or what is the love of your life?
Music. There’s been a lot of turmoil in my life, but it’s always been there.
Who would you invite to a dinner party?
All of my friends and Jesus Christ, because you’d never run out of wine.
How often do you have sex?
I try for every day. I feel being very sexually active is great in a relationship.
Who makes you laugh the most?
The band. They’re so quick and funny.
What is your experience of grief?
My father died in 2008 just before the band took off, so he never got to see any of this. I’ve been living with that. My mum died this year on the same day – Valentine’s Day.
What makes you angry?
That there aren’t enough hours in the day to do everything I want to do.
Leave or remain?
I think people are stronger together.
All-time favourite movie?
Forrest Gump.
What was your fave childhood TV show?
Grange Hill and The Monkees.
What is your earliest memory?
Lying my head on the pedal of the piano at home, plucking the strings and just listening to it resonate.
If you could travel back in time, where would you go?
To Rome to the time of Constantine the Great, the Roman emperor.
Which public figure do you admire?
Mark [Sheehan, 42], our guitarist. He’s a principled and solid human.
What possession would you rescue from a burning building?
Any musical instruments.
Who was your first kiss?
A girl named Susanne Percil at the back of the bike sheds at school.
What is your biggest regret?
Not auditioning for the part of Gaston in the remake of Beauty And The Beast.
What song would you have played at your funeral?
Queen’s Who Wants To Live Forever.
Do you have a pub trick?
I was a champion break-dancer in Ireland.
What’s on your bucket list?
To ride a horse bareback on the Irish coast, and to see the earth from space.
What happens when we die?
I think we go back to what we were before we were born, but I’m smart enough to know that I’m dumb enough to never know.

Who is your celebrity crush?
Sandra Bullock. You don’t know her, do you?
Best and worst qualities?
I’m positive, but I’m too positive when I shouldn’t be. I’m also normally really late.
Most famous person in your phone?
Taylor Swift or Samuel L Jackson.
