[Women's Soccer] Hawks Comeback Falls Just Short against No. 9 Westmont
EL CAJON, Calif. – The SDC women's soccer team gave the No. 9 team in the nation a scare on senior day.
The Hawks were neck and neck with Westmont before the Warriors were able to score three goals in a 16-minute span to give them a 4-2 win over SDC on Saturday.
With the loss, the Hawks are eliminated from postseason play but played well against a top-10 team.
Joanna Ortiz almost gave the Hawks an early lead as her shot was saved by the Westmont goalie then rolled and hit the post before Gabi Haw pounced on the ball to keep the score 0-0 in the 11th minute.
While that was the only shot SDC was able to get off, the score was tied 0-0 at the break. Shelbi Horner collected two crucial saves.
Six minutes into the second half, the Warriors were able to get it by Horner for the first time of the game. Five minutes later, however, Alexia Orenday got the Hawks on the board and tied the game 1-1.
After another eight minutes of back and forth, the Warriors added their second. They added two more in the 70th and 81st minutes.
Veronica Romero was able to cut the deficit in half in the 84th minute but it was too little, too late.
The Hawks play their last game against The Master's at 1 p.m. at Miramar College.
