Anthony Ogogo signs up as wrestler with AEW just months after retiring because of horrific eye injury
ANTHONY OGOGO has been signed up as a wrestler – months after retiring because of a horrific eye injury.
The London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist, 30, has signed with AEW, who are trying to rival WWE.
AEW co-owner Cody Rhodes appeared at Saturday’s Southside Wrestling event in Stevenage, Herts, to announce the signing of Ogogo.
Later in the show, Ogogo took part and had a row with wrestler MJF.
Ogogo has not fought as a boxer since October 2016 when he was stopped by Craig Cunningham in the eighth round.
After the fight it was revealed that the middleweight had suffered a broken eye socket.
He also revealed he has had seven operations on his eyes in the last two-and-a-half years, and 17 in total throughout his career.
However it has not stopped him from pursuing a new career in wrestling.
Rhodes confirmed Ogogo will be the promotion’s first developmental project, as the ex-boxer starts life in his new sport at the bottom.
He tweeted: “I’m thrilled about this signing. Anthony will be our first developmental project as a company.
“For those who followed his boxing career and saw his Olympic acumen, you’ll be happy to see he’s now applying that passion and work-ethic to pro-wrestling training. Welcome Anthony!”
