[Men's Soccer] Bearcats Clinch Post Season Berth
The Brescia Bearcats (4-3 River States Conference) once again, on the road, took on Asbury University to advance its overall record to 5-9 and 4-3 in the River States Conference. The Bearcats have now won three straight matches and five of the last seven contests.
"This is a huge win for our program and for our players. This win clinched us a tournament berth and that was a big goal for us entering the season," said Williams.
In the first half the teams battled back and forth, but it was the Bearcats that struck first and second. The Bearcats would get a goal off of a service into the box from senior captain Davis Mitchell (SR, Spottsville, Ky.). He would find forward Milton Garcia (JR, Jasper, Ind.) for the header past the Asbury keeper.
The second goal would come from Sam Coxon (SO, Barns Green, England) as held off two Asbury defenders and slipped the ball past the Eagles keeper. The Bearcats would take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The second half saw both teams trying to create more chances, but neither defense conceding. The Asbury Eagles reeled off 13 shots in the last 30 minutes of the match.
"Not to take anything away from Asbury, they played a great match, but we made some tactical changes that took us a while to adjust," said Williams.
The Bearcats were slated to finish 7th in the River States Conference and they currently are sitting in 5th place.
"We are continuing to build as a team and improve each week. Just controlling what we can. I'm proud of our defending tonight as a whole. That has been something that we have focused on throughout the season," said Williams.
In the last three matches, the Bearcats defense has allowed just one lone goal.
The Bearcats will return to action as they take on Carlow next Thursday, October 31st, in a RSC contest.
