[Volleyball] Volleyball falls 3-1 to CIU on the road
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Montreat College volleyball dropped an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup to Columbia International, 3-1 (25-19, 15-25, 25-20, 25-23), Saturday afternoon in Columbia. With two matches remaining in the regular-season, the Cavs currently sit at 10-8 in conference play.
"CIU came ready to play, and our inconsistency got the best of us," said head coach Kristy Kamer. "We need to do a better job at executing, and I know we can. We'll get back in the gym on Monday and work on those things."
Other than a 1-1 tie early in the first set, CIU held the lead in the entire frame. Montreat would come as close as 17-14, but the Cavs couldn't keep up as the Rams took the opening set 25-19.
The second set seemed as if it would go the same way early on, but Montreat gained some momentum with five straight points for a 6-3 lead. The Cavs pulled away toward the end to answer with a 25-15 win in the frame, tying the match up at one apiece.
The third set was back-and-forth, and the Cavs were right on the heels of the Rams at 21-20, but CIU would ultimately hold on for the 25-20 win and a 2-1 lead in the match. The fourth set was another close battle. Both teams were tied at 23 at the end, but CIU would capitalize on a pair of kills to take the 25-23 win.
Ila Elstein and Taylor Coe led the attack with 10 kills each. Coe also posted six block assists in the match. Katie James notched 30 assists while Kate Mabe led defensively with 13 digs. Vivica Nogueira and Ally Brown had 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
Up Next: The Cavs travel to Milligan College on Tuesday, Oct. 29 for their last road game of the regular-season. The match begins at 6:30 p.m. ET.
