Ex-A’s pitcher Straily signs with Korea team
Former A’s right-hander Dan Straily signed a one-year contract worth $800,000 with South Korea’s Lotte Giants, the Korea Baseball Organization club announced Saturday.
Straily, 31, became a free agent in October after spending last season with the Baltimore Orioles, his sixth major-league team.
The A’s selected him in the 24th round of the 2009 draft. He spent his first 2½ major-league seasons in Oakland and started Game 4 for the 2013 AL Division Series against Detroit. Midway through the 2014 season, Straily was teaded to the Chicago Cubs along with shortstop Addison Russell and outfielder Billy McKinney for pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel.
He has not played for more than two seasons with a single team since, pitching also for the Houston Astros, Cincinnati Reds and Miami Marlins.
Baltimore traded him to Philadelphia before the trade deadline last season, but he only appeared in the Phillies’ minor-league system.
Each KBO team is allowed two foreign pitchers with Straily joining pitcher Adrian Sampson, formerly of the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers, who signed with the Giants in November.
