The latest promotional clip from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker effectively debunks an ongoing theory about Rey's parents. When Daisy Ridley's scavenger character debuted in Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, speculations about her origins quickly came up considering her ability to tap into the Force. Rumors of a connection to previously introduced Star Wars characters was rampant, until Star Wars: The Last Jedi revealed that she's not linked to any of the prominent characters in the franchise. Despite this, it didn't stop some from speculating that there's more to her character than what's been said thus far.
J.J. Abrams is back to helm The Rise of Skywalker after kicking off the sequel trilogy with The Force Awakens. Plot details are still scant at the moment with Disney and Lucasfilm ensuring that there's no unwanted spoiler leak before the movie hits theaters next week - especially when it's the culmination of everything that has transpired in the Skywalker saga since the franchise began. And since it's supposed to address all lingering loose ends, fans are hoping that it'll give a definitive answer with regard to the questions surrounding Rey's origins.
A trailer for The Rise of Skywalker features a ship looking very similar to the one that Rey saw after she was left in Jakku in her Skywalker lightsaber-induced vision in The Force Awakens. Some took this as an indication that Star Wars 9 will reveal her parents - or at least whoever left her on the sand planet. However, the latest promotional clip for the movie effectively disproves that as it's also the same ship that Rey, Finn (John Boyega), and Poe (Oscar Isaac) use when they break into a First Order Star Destroyer. Abrams himself lent credence to the assumption that there's more to Rey than what has been said about her thus far. Given this, it's not difficult to imagine that Lucasfilm is going to walk back on The Last Jedi's reveal that Rey's parents are drunkards who sold her for money. If anything, there's a case to be made about Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) not being a dependable source of information since he was trying to convince Rey to join him. It's worth noting, however, that the fan community is split on this matter - some are content with her being a normal person who happens to be strong with the Force, while others are unsatisfied with this considering that The Force Awakens was clearly setting up something regarding her lineage.
Perhaps Abrams wasn't exactly pertaining to Rey's parents, instead it's more of her origins. The return of Ian McDiarmid as Emperor Palpatine coupled with the debut of Dark Rey in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker promos is fueling speculations that she has something to do with Darth Sidious. Regardless of what Lucasfilm will do with her character, it's only one of the many lingering plot threads that the film needs to acknowledge. Fortunately, it won't be too long before the public gets some answers.
