Umbrella Academy Theory: Season 2 Will Separate The Hargreeves
The Hargreeves’ last minute escape plan might not go as expected, and they could end up separated in The Umbrella Academy season 2. The siblings had to join forces at the end of season 1 to stop the apocalypse, caused by their sister Vanya (Ellen Page), but they learned the hard way that there are some things that can’t be avoided. In order to save themselves, Number Five used his time-travel powers to take his siblings and himself to a different time, though where they landed was left unknown.
Based on the comic book series of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy is a superhero TV show that follows the dysfunctional family of adopted siblings, the Hargreeves. All of them were born on the same day under very mysterious circumstances, and they have different superpowers. These kids were adopted by Sir. Reginald Hargreeves, who turned them into a superhero team called “the Umbrella Academy”. As expected, the Hargreeves children didn’t have an ordinary upbringing, and ended up going their own ways, reuniting years later when their father passed away and the end of the world was fast approaching.
Teaming up to stop the apocalypse turned out to be ineffective, and they only ended up contributing to the destruction of the planet (unbeknownst to them, of course). The solution was to travel through time thanks to Five’s powers and save themselves – but it’s not a foolproof plan, and it could separate the siblings when they need to be together.
At the end of The Umbrella Academy season 1, the siblings were in the process of traveling through time thanks to a portal created by Five that made the rest look like their 13 year-old selves, just like Five. Because of that, the general assumption is that they traveled to the past so they can do their best to really avoid the apocalypse this time. However, Five’s powers have failed a couple of times, and as he had never used them to transport six people with him (including Ben), there’s the possibility that his powers failed and didn't send them to where he wanted, even leaving them all in different places. A theory posted on a Reddit thread suggests the Hargreeves could end up scattered and forced to create their own lives while looking for their siblings.
The author proposes the Vietnam War era as setting, which would have some interesting effects on the kids. Maybe Klaus will be too distracted looking for Dave, his lost love from the war. Allison, who is now mute and therefore powerless, would struggle in a time where society was unforgiving to women of color. And Vanya, who has been lost and feeling alienated her whole life, would only feel more confused when finding herself in another time and far from her siblings. The Hargreeves being separated when they need to be together in order to show their support to Vanya and thus avoid the apocalypse, would add drama and (more) conflict to The Umbrella Academy season 2, and would be a very interesting storyline to watch – especially because they would look like their younger selves but with all the knowledge and memories they already had, very much like Five in season 1.
