[Men's Basketball] Point Wins a Close Game at Home against the Buffaloes
West Point, Ga. – Point overcame a tight game and pulled out a 80-75 win at home against the Milligan College Buffaloes in an AAC conference match up. The win allowed the Skyhawks to exceed their conference win total for last year. From the start, the game was close, with the Skyhawks only to be able to pull away by 5 points with 5 minutes gone in the game, 15-10. Milligan, however, was able to tie the game for the third time at 15 with 13:46 left in the first half. At that point, both teams traded baskets only going up by a single point. Then the visitors started to pull away and extended their lead by 8 points 4 times in the first half. At 5:43 left on the clock, the Buffaloes reached their final 8 point lead (31-23) and the Skyhawks started to cut into the deficit. After a made 3 point shot by Brent Gaither (JR/Jonesboro, Ga.), Point took back the lead by one (32-31) and then was able to extend their lead to 36-31 just before the break scoring the last 11 points of the half. Coming out of the locker room, the Skyhawks quickly increased their lead to 14 points with only 3 and half minutes elapsed in the second half, 48-34. The Buffaloes battled back, but Point claimed another 14 point lead at 15:23 left on the clock, 53-39. Milligan cut the lead to 8 points twice, but a Jarell Holmes (SO/Dacula, Ga.) basket helped extend their lead back up to 14 once more, 63-49 with 10:16 left. After that, the Buffaloes had a run of their own (11-4) and were able to cut the deficit to 1, 74-73, with 38 seconds left in the game. But Lorenzo Freeman (JR/Tuscaloosa, Al.) made three free throws and Jordan Bates (SR/Orlando, Fl.) one in the final seconds, to put the game away for the Skyhawks, 80-75. The win gives the Skyhawks an overall record of 10-4 and an AAC record of 6-3. The Skyhawks now sit alone in third place in the AAC Conference standings.
