My late husband’s mate says our friendship is over unless we have sex

DEAR DEIDRE: FOR more than 40 years I have been good friends with a guy but now he says our friendship is over unless our relationship includes sex.

We met when he and my late husband were mates. His late wife and I hit it off and our kids were good friends.

We had many family holidays together. Tragedy hit us both a few years ago. My husband was killed in a car accident and his wife died of cancer.

We started going out at the weekends together and then had a couple of weekend breaks. He is 67 and I am 63. We went on holiday to the Canaries recently and he wanted us to sleep together, but I made it clear I just see him as a friend and insisted on separate rooms.

Now he says we can’t go on being friends when he has fallen for me and wants a full relationship including sex, and I’m saying no.

DEIDRE SAYS: It’s sad for you both, as neither of you can help how you feel. He’s probably right that it’s best to step away, at least for now.

Start socialising with other friends or make some new ones. Spending less time with each other and with fresh interests, you may be able to salvage your friendship in a while.
