Lucs 15 v 10 Huddersfield
Luctonians RFC 15 v 10 Huddersfield RUFC
Saturday 14th December 2019
By Geoffers
Luctonians stole the honours in this scrappy but tight affair, which was often error strewn with numerous handling errors, with an exceptional exhibition of how to defend your try line. Their tackling in the last 10 minutes when under heavy pressure from a powerful Huddersfield pack saw them keep their opponents scoreless whilst camped in the home side’s red zone. Time after time Field threw everything at the Black and Whites but they were thwarted on numerous occasions as the game finished in the dark.
Lucs opened the scoring after 3 minutes when John Morris knocked over a penalty and the home side appeared to be coasting when Drew Cheshire scored on the half hour following good work by Aiden Cheshire and Rob Lewis to lead 8-0.
It wasn’t pretty rugby as the pitch was very heavy following a wet week in Herefordshire, and was not condusive for running rugby. And so it proved to be with no more scores until right on half time when Will Milner kicked Field’s first points from a penalty to send the teams in with Lucs leading 8-3.
Half Time Score
Luctonians 8 v 3 Huddersfield
Huddersfield came out early after half time looking to put pressure on their opponents from the restart and it worked almost immediately when Josh Crickmay was used to power his way over on 45minutes from a driving maul, Milner adding the extras to put them ahead 8-10.
The game became very stop start with long holdups for player treatment, as numerous injuries and confusion over player availability, with Field at one stage having no replacement props available and Guy Borrowdale having seen yellow for numerous team technical infringements when Lucs were camped on their line. The officials having to have plenty of on field discussions with both captains to sort who was and wasn’t available to be on the field.
After what seemed an eternity following another long period of non-activity, Lucs were awarded a scrum 5 metres out, and Aiden Cheshire stole over from close in, with John Morris knocking over the conversion to give the home side a 15-10 advantage after 56 minutes.
The game became very attritional and as the gloom descended Lucs were penalised repeatedly, giving Field the chance to kick to touch and use their very mobile driving maul. The home crowd were certainly giving their team plenty of support and in the descending gloom Lucs’ defence was exceptional, and despite losing Aiden Cheshire, again for a team yellow, they held firm to record a valuable result in this bottom of the table battle.
