Ljungberg details worrying insight into frustrations with Arsenal board
Arsenal interim boss Freddie Ljungberg has called on the club’s board to “make a decision” on the club’s next permanent manager following a frustrating 3-0 defeat to Manchester City.
Having shown signs of a recovery with a 3-1 win over West Ham on Monday, similar problems emerged for the Gunners as they struggled to get to grips with the Premier League champions at the Emirates.
Kevin de Bruyne put on a masterclass with two goals – including a clinical finish for his first inside two minutes – and an assist for Raheem Sterling’s strike.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Ljungberg provided his insight into the discussions that have so far taken place between himself and the Arsenal hierarchy.
“I’ve said to [the board] they need to make a decision,” the Swede said. “We are here to help and the staff are trying to chip in but a decision has to be made so we can have the same resources as other clubs.
“When I say that they that say I have to wait and see.”
Speaking about Mesut Ozil – who threw his gloves to the ground in apparent anger following his substitution, Ljungberg said: “I took Mesut off because I wanted some more energy in the team.
“How he reacts is up to him and we will deal with it later. I’m here on a day-to-day basis but of course we want players in the right way.”
When asked about his side’s performance in general, Ljungberg added: “I’m proud of our boys. It shows the quality Manchester City have in their side.
“Kevin de Bruyne showed his quality. We had worked on our structure and we had five against two but they still managed to score. They are the champions. I was proud of our boys. When you look at the age of the side that finished it was not an old side. I felt we kept the ball OK and played well.
“But we couldn’t get that final spark and when you are 2-0 and 3-0 down early it takes the edge off. The players showed spirit but it is hard to play at 3-0 down.
“If you look you see the players and price tags they put in from the bench, we have young kids who we put on. There is a gulf but I am still proud of the boys.”
Arsenal‘s next games see them face Everton at Goodison Park next Saturday, before a trip to Bournemouth on Boxing Day.
