No complaints for Ferguson as he explains surprising Kean withdrawal
Everton interim boss Duncan Ferguson has said that he is “delighted” with how his tenure has begun following the 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Sunday.
Having beaten Chelsea 3-1 at Goodison Park last weekend, Everton were much the better side at Old Trafford for spells this time around and after Victor Lindelof’s own goal gave them the advantage, they were ahead until 78 minutes.
United academy graduate Mason Greenwood equalised in the 4,000th consecutive game in which the club have included a homegrown talent in their matchday squad, but Ferguson said he could have no complaints.
He told Sky Sports after the game: “I am delighted at the moment. We have got a point. Of course we were winning but I cannot complain.
“They came on strong in the second half but I thought we looked good on the counter attack. The boys were absolutely amazing.
“We beat a top team in Chelsea and now we’ve come to Old Trafford and got a draw.”
The game also saw Moise Kean introduced by Ferguson to replace Bernard after 70 minutes, before the striker was then taken off 18 minutes later for Oumar Niasse.
Explaining that substitution, Ferguson said: “It was not because of his performance. I just needed to make a substitution to kill a bit of time.
“I have a lot of strikers on the bench, it was nothing against him personally. I thought he had not quite got into the pace of the game.
“Also, I have so many attackers on the bench I just needed to make a change to waste a bit of time. It is nothing to do with the player.
“I will [speak to him] when I see him.”
Everton‘s next game sees them face Leicester in the EFL Cup on Wednesday before a Premier League clash with Arsenal awaits next Saturday.
