Violent protests erupt in India over new citizenship legislation

Violent demonstrations erupted in New Dehli after police fired tear gas to disperse the thousands of protesters fighting against new citizenship laws.
Reports said the death toll rose to six on Sunday, including four people shot by police. Witnesses said several protesters were detained and some of the injured were taken to nearby hospitals.

Police said they were forced to respond when demonstrators threw stones and overturned motorcycles.
“It has caused damaged to public property. It has caused arson and it has motorcycles on fire. It has pelted stones on us and we have got injured. Our only interest is to push them back, so that they get dispersed, and the law and order is restored in the area.”

This is the fifth consecutive day of protests against the new law, which was enacted last week.
