An artist has given Brandon Routh's Kingdom Come Superman an HBO Max series in a fan-made poster. The Superman Returns actor played the Man of Steel for the first time in 13 years in The CW's Crisis on Infinite Earths. Although notable for his Superman role, modern fans know him best for his portrayal of the Atom on Legends of Tomorrow. In March, Routh said goodbye to the small hero after a number of years on the Arrowverse.
In 2006, Warner Bros. released Superman Returns. It was the first theatrical Superman movie since 1987's Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Routh was chosen to play the titular hero and was the first actor to don the cape since Christopher Reeve's legendary portrayal. Superman Returns served as a sequel of sorts to Superman II. Although many critical reviews weren't bad, the film's reputation among fans was not positive over the years. Still, Brandon Routh's portrayal of the character has seen a resurgence in popularity, thanks in no small part to him donning the cape again in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Some even enjoyed Routh's return enough to hope for a TV series starring his Superman.
Over on Instagram, artist artoftimetravel has given Routh's Superman a fan-made poster for a hypothetical series. The poster has Routh in a battle position against a Fortress of Solitude backdrop. Unsurprisingly, the HBO Max logo is used, which is the service many likely would want to see a series on. Check out the poster below.
In Crisis on Infinite Earths, Earth-38's Superman and a couple other characters go to Earth-96 to recruit Routh's Kingdom Come Superman. This takes place after Lois Lane has died in a Daily Planet gas attack created by a "reject from Gotham," who is implied to be the Joker. Thus, Superman donned a red and black insignia to signify, "Even in the darkest times, hope cuts through." At the end of Crisis, Routh's Superman is shown flying in space, now donning a more familiar yellow and red logo color scheme. This rich backstory could provide the perfect setup for an entertaining, emotional TV series on HBO Max.
A Routh-starring Superman series could also deliver an intriguing Superman Returns followup. It could adapt the death of Lois referenced in Crisis on Infinite Earths and explore the Man of Steel's relationship with his son, Jason. Of course, Crisis could have altered reality in such a way that Lois never died, offering a clean slate for storytelling. Although fans shouldn't get their hopes up, no one likely thought Michael Keaton's Batman would return to the big screen either, so anything is possible.
